Singing vowels are the absolute most important aspect of singing in regard to tone. Not having near-perfect singing vowels is the culprit of a lot of vocal problems: inaccurate pitch/singing flat, dull tone, difficulty singing riffs and runs, and a lack of vowels simply makes singing harder. Luckily, vowels are easy to learn and they fix almost all of this the instant you start using them!
If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments, I'm always happy to answer them!!
Here's also the links to the performances I mentioned, of singers displaying really awesome vowels:
These are just a few examples from these great singers, but there are so many other examples of singers with great vowels. Type in "live performance" next to the name of your favorite singer, and you'll most likely see them displaying these awesome vowel shapes.
Like I said in the video - as you get good at this, you don't need to keep your lips as narrow, because the muscles in your cheeks hold that space for you. So often you'll see singers like Miley and Kelly who can keep their lips wide but hold onto their space regardless. I still strongly suggest that you both practice vowels with narrow lips to learn them, and always narrow that opening whenever you find you're struggling to sing something in your singing journey, and ESPECIALLY when you're singing riffs and runs!
