Heliconius butterfly courtship

Male Heliconius melpomene courts and attempts mating with female. These are from an experimental interracial hybrid population involving H.m. plessini (Ecuador) and H.m. maderia (Brazil). Individuals with hindwing rays are preferred over individuals with all black HW. Female releases anti-aphrodisiac compounds by exposing abdominal gland.
