Scott Dietzen, another East-Coaster (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg Pennsylvania) decided not to stay in the academic world and going to actually create products in the market. Scott is a successful entrepeneur that sold Weblogic to Oracle and later Zimbra to Yahoo and later to VMware. One thing I like to quote from this interview when I asked about the plethora of storage startups today: "someone gets to build a new long term independent company"
