Aesthetics are only important if you have enough money for them. A lot of people (including me) don't have the money. In that case, I would want to spend more on performance if I'm not going to get the best performance with the money I have anyway.

Sleeper builds are my favorite kind of PCs, you bring your friends, they see the tin can and when you boot it up they're blown away. Just a a dream

Aesthetics are secondary to performance because most DIY PC builders do not have unlimited budgets. That means that if you have spare money left over after speccing your build, the average PC enthusiast would rather save the extra money or spend it on a performance upgrade. Also, since we're usually on a budget, we're already getting the best deal we can find on components instead of trying to color or aesthetically match them, meaning that trying to move to an aesthetically pleasing build is more expensive even for the same performance.
