The Manchester Ship Canal, affectionately known by locals as The Big Ditch, was officially opened on 21st May 1894, but was in use by January 1st of the same year.
The Irlam Locks provide a lift of 16 feet. Like the other locks on the Manchester Ship Canal, there are two locks. A large lock for ocean-going ships and a smaller, narrower lock for vessels such as tugs and coasters. This is the smaller (350 x 45 ft) lock.
