Two political dynasties are clashing in the Philippines as the Marcos and Duterte families trade insults and apparent death threats as their union breaks down. So in this video, we'll explain what's happening and why they've turned on each other.

Our mission is to explain news and politics in an impartial, efficient, and accessible way, balancing import and interest while fostering independent thought.

TLDR is a completely independent & privately owned media company that's not afraid to tackle the issues we think are most important. The channel is run by a small group of young people, with us hoping to pass on our enthusiasm for politics to other young people. We are primarily fan sourced with most of our funding coming from donations and ad revenue. No shady corporations, no one telling us what to say. We can't wait to grow further and help more people get informed. Help support us by subscribing, engaging and sharing. Thanks!

Political dynasties are good for no one but the families. If there was ever any amendments limiting a family for a term, I'd happily accept.

Ah the Philippines, my homeland, everyday it feels less of a Democracy and more of modern Feudalism, we even have our lords already, t'was inevitable for House Duterte and House Marcos to clash one another unfortunately... Give us a break already...

Sadly we have higher and stricter standards for our beauty queens than our public servants. Even normal people have stricter requirements for employment.

All I think about, when I try to understand why politics is the way it is in the Philippines, I keep coming back to one undeniable fact: poverty. It’s not that Filipinos are inherently foolish, but poverty breeds ignorance, and ignorance fuels manipulation. The harsh reality is that poverty forces many Filipinos into a survival mode where they are left with little choice but to trade their votes for their immediate survival. This isn't a matter of ignorance; it's desperation. It’s about keeping food on the table today, because tomorrow is uncertain.

Unity was their only platform and they even did not accomplish that 🙄

Filipinoes are soo friendly very resilient but naive at the same time. How many floods people been through. Their govenment need to really work on their plumbing, roads, and create river beds to have water flow back to the sea. The media is always showing how it’s okay for them to have floods since people like to swim in them anyway. They have to make their cities flood proof! They have to have a federal budget especially for the cities that are always having typhoons.

I live in Philippines, my wife is Filipina we have two kids. You can really see political Dynasty's from the local government level. Where I live, the father, son and wife all run this island I live on. Alot of questionable things happen here.

The vast majority of the Filipino people voted for political dynasties last election despite other candidates significantly having better credentials....I mean, what do they expect?
It's funny how some of them be asking how our government becomes like this.
"Well-mannered is better than well-educated", right?

How is anyone supposed to take a statement that ends with "That's not a joke" or "I'm serious". It's a threat, plain and simple

their supporters (uniteam) did this to themselves. we warned them these are just families wanting to consolidate power instead of helping filipinos. now, their infighting is being broadcasted worldwide and businesses will think we got political instability again. good job uniteam supporters, holding back our country once again

There is some missing information in this report. First, Rodrigo Duterte wanted his assistant at the time, Bong Go, to run for president and be paired with Sara Duterte. However, it was her friend, Imee Marcos, who convinced Sara to join the UniTeam. Rodrigo Duterte never liked Bongbong Marcos to begin with. He said that Bongbong had baggage and was a weak leader, which is why he couldn’t support the UniTeam at that time.

This is a constitutional design flaw. The US had a similar flaw until the 12th Amendment was passed after the chaotic 1800 election. It is never a good idea to have the president and vice president be from opposite parties. This creates a strong incentive for each of them to take out the other to seize more power. The vice president should be an assistant to the president, not a rival.

I'm just a rice farmer here in Surigao del Sur all I want is cheaper fertilizer cheaper gasoline so that we can run our machinery without hurting our pocket and water irrigation just that all I want just that this current president of our promises to help the farmers but so far no action at all even once instead the fertilizer price skyrocketed. THIS COUNTRY IS HOPELESS NO MATTER WHO YOU PUT AT THE TOP CORRUPTION PREVAIL FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.

As a Filipino, it is.embarassing that foreigners are taking note of this. Philippine politics is very personality driven: political party membership changes, merges etc unlike the US with Republicans and Democrats.

The astonishing part is that during the campaign, they promised UNITY—their only platform. Not even halfway through their term, they are already showing their true colors. Yet, many Filipino people still support this kind of politics and continue to defend both sides.
It’s the battle of kadiliman (darkness) Vs. Kasamaan (Evil).

There's been a recent development to this. The Marcos government has allowed Duterte to be been arrested by the ICC and is being flown to the Hague to be tried for crimes against humanity. Would love a video about the process of these trials.

I've spent some time in the Philippines- my wife is Filipina. Something I both noticed but was also confirmed in conversations that I don't hear people talk about enough is the divide between North & South or the Tagalogs and Cebuanos. A lot of Cebuanos in the Visayas & Mindanao have felt kind of shafted by the Tagalogs in Luzon for decades. There's kind of a divide there even when it comes to language and to certain extent, culture. There's a reason why a lot of Cebuanos got behind Duterte - they viewed him as a sort of Trump figure to shake things up and bring law & order. At least that was the bill of goods they were sold. That said, neither the Marcoses or Dutertes really have their people/region's best interest in heart. They're all corrupt and just out for themselves.
