Y'all have me tearing up with all your kind words and insightful thoughts. I didn't expect this to do as well as it's doing. This show and Toph have been important/influential to me since I was a kid. So seeing this impact so many people in a ton of different places and in a ton of different ways is incredible. For those of you wondering if Toph Really _is_ what she's cracked up to be, here's a list: Almost singlehandedly invading the Earth Kingdom Palace with a little help from team avatar, Completely Singlehandedly defeating several of Dai Li agents at once on multiple occasions, Inventing Metalbending within a matter of hours, by herself, out of sheer stubbornness, teaching a peaceful air nomad kid to stand his ground like am earthbender in only a few weeks, Singlehandedly defeating an entire underground fight club of earthbenders at ONCE, busting down any metal door she wanted too, Singlehandedly defeating three Sozin's-comet-boosted firebenders with little more than door, and destroying three-to-five Airships with ease, and that's BEFORE she hit her prime.
She then went on to learn how to see the entire world from within a swamp, Kick an avatar's butt, and force a merciless conquerer to stand down by her presence alone.

Toph is a great character on her own, but I really like how she mirrors Aang's story. Much like her associated element, Toph's origin and character is the antithesis of Aang's. Aang struggles with living up to the expectations and pressure that comes with being the Avatar. It takes a long time for him to accept his role, because he (at first) would much rather live the care-free life of an Air Nomad, the one he was born into. Toph is the opposite, born disabled to an affluent family, Toph wasn't expected to be a warrior. She had to actively construct her destiny and constantly reject the path that had been chosen for her. Pretty dope shit y'all.

I love how in the first season earth bending was seen as basic and boring compared to the other elements. All we ever saw was people throwing rocks or shaking the ground. Then Toph comes in and shows what it truly means to be a master of the earth.

I love how Toph's bending is just so unique. Like, we've seen benders using techniques from other elements, but Toph? She's straight up creating her own moves and that's awesome

Most characters develop in a way that makes them more independent. They start needing the care of others and end up standing on their two feet alone through progress.

Toph on the other hand develops in reverse. She stands alone with her two legs, carrying her own weight. She views that anyone who wants to take care of her that sees her as weak and helpless.

Her character development is one of accepting the help of others and that you don't have to stand on your own two feet, you can relay on the strength of your friends to help you.

I must say I love her development.

it's been years but she still gives me chills with her bending technique. like, she does small movements that seem effortless but the impact is earth-shattering (pun intended).
