transport logistic - The Challenges of Digitisation

The transport and logistics industry is changing - smart logistics is the buzzword of the hour. The big players like Amazon, Daimler, Flexport and Panalpina are using transport logistic as a platform for constructive exchange. Digitisation poses new challenges for all the players.

Bernd Schwenger, Head of Amazon Logistic Germany:
The transport and logistics sector could react a little faster to digitisation, especially as customers are increasingly communicating their needs digitally which have to be added to the logistics processes.

Stefan Karlen, President & CEO Panalpina: The digitalisation is very important for our industry, especially in today's world where everybody talks about it, everybody is expecting improvements. I think the interface and the data sharing among customer suppliers is extremely important. That allows us to create a value for them.

Thus networking and innovation are a focus of the leading trade fair for the worldwide sector. The Bombardier locomotive was designed for cross-border use between countries - technically no easy matter.

Peter Honegger, Director Marketing & Product Bombardier:
The innovation of this locomotive is that it is on the move throughout Europe and has the security systems and grid voltages for the whole of Europe and thus can bring Europe together, so to speak.

The road of the future may possibly be driven by Iveco's aerodynamic Z-truck. Thanks to sensor technology and liquid petrol gas, it should drive autonomously and emission-free.

Fraunhofer IML is also pursuing similar futuristic ideas. Due to the cage the drone is particularly safe and could one day re-define work processes completely.

Martin Döltgen, Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML:
The application possibilities of drones in many places are being investigated, there is a huge potential. A lot of different scenarios are being developed, it’s about the last mile of delivery, but also about tasks, with a lot of manual effort, such as the inventory by hand, which could, for example, be taken over by a drone autonomously.

The digitisation of the logistics chain is a global challenge that the industry can only meet as a combined force. Transport logistic accompanies the industry on its way into a smart future.
