2nd track from "Not The Same" (1980). A smooth, jazzy ballad about finally realizing that God is where it's at. The place to be. The place to stand. Standing is a simple act that can signal a decision, a vote, or a commitment. It can be an act of courage or personal growth. Here, I think it's all of the above.

Time and time again you've turned away
But now you've returned and you're here to stay
The world has left you wonderin' who to blame
But that don't really matter 'cause you're not the same

The time has come for you to find yourself
In the fullness of His love
The time has come to stand

Don't sit and worry 'bout the things people say
'Cause when you follow men you're sure to lose your way
Jesus wants you just for who you are
Friend, in His eyes you're nothing less than a star

The time has come for you to find yourself
In the fullness of His love
The time has come to stand

The time has come for you to see
The time has come for you to be
Whoa! He wants you just for who you are
He wants you just the way you are

So go ahead and live your life to please Him
'Cause when you fall in love with Him
You'll never wanna leave Him
Jesus takes you just for who you are
Friend, in His eyes you're nothing less than a star

The time has come for you to find yourself
In the fullness of His love
The time has come to
The time has come to whoa
The time has come to stand

Not The Same is considered by many fans of Westcoast/AOR to be a masterpiece of the genre and one of the crown jewels of smooth CCM. So I'm seriously jazzed to have recently acquired the 1992 reissued, remastered CD (even though it set me back 35 bucks!).

The album's first song starts out "I may not sing a stylish song and I may not look the part." I think that's telling because 1980 was the beginning of the MTV generation, a time when lots of artists who were otherwise very talented but not so photogenic hit a huge roadblock in their careers. I remember reading once, I think it was in CCM Magazine, where Roby quipped he was a pop singer trapped in a coal miner's body!

But of course, that didn't stop Roby. This down-home, talented vocalist and accomplished guitarist from Mississippi would go on to make his mark in the music world anyway—adding his distinctive voice to Hollywood mega-hit movies like "Titanic" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," and producing more than 50 international albums while performing extensively all over the world including Asia, Europe, the UK, and Australia. His fans span the globe! More important, he helped countless people change their lives forever with his positive message of God's love.
