I've lived in 8 states -- West Coast, Midwest, East and South -- and one Canadian province. I currently live in my #1 location, 3000 miles from where I was born: SW Virginia on the WV border, between two mountain ranges. Not too hot, not too cold, long growing season, not too populated, long local history of self-sufficiency. Low fire danger, lots of wild edibles. People here won't miss a beat when the power goes out.

Became a private pilot with IFR and training on pontoon water landings. Bought 60 acres on a lake in the middle of nowhere Alaska. 170 miles to the closest town, which is quite small. Built a home below ground. Small, but big enough for the 4 of us. Been stock piling food for 10 years and could live for 20 years or more. We have berries, rabbits, fish, and a number of other plants. Got wind, solar and small hydro power and am completely off the grid. Unlimited fire wood just from downed trees. Hidden shelter for airplane. Two snow machines in case we have to get out and can't fly. CB radios, ham radios, shortwave radios, Starlink, etc. Plenty of guns, ammo and other tools. Wife is a nurse with 20 years of ER experience. Lots of dvds, hundreds of books, and our bibles. Bring it on!

I'm in South Carolina, hurricane Debby is about to test my prepardness. I think I've got things covered.

I moved to Arkansas from Minnesota 2 years ago for this very reason. I can't tell you how happy I am I did.
My heating season is about 6 weeks 3 cords of wood is great plenty. Growing season is easily 9 months long, grass is green 11 months.
I have never produced so much in a garden before coming here.
Between the woods and water it awesome.
July and August are hot 90 to 100 everyday. But I will take that over a 6 month Minnesota winter.

NYC in the 1950s was terrible. I was a girl and my father took us to see the Rockettes every year. He kept such a grip on my arm I had marks. There were all kinds of homeless. They were called bums then. So when I grew up I stopped going. Then started traveling in the late 80s and had a layover in NY. Dreaded it but was very surprised. When Rudy was in office he cleaned it up. It was fantastic. Haven’t been back since 2000 so it may be in decline again. But for a few years it was the good New York people might remember.

You need to mention that if you build a basement, you do not have to have much heating and cooling !! You can do many small things that add up to big savings.
