A passenger at Orlando airport described being ushered off a plane and waiting at the terminal on Wednesday after a NOTAM system outage suspended flights across the United States.
Lou Mongello said passengers were offered meal vouchers as well as snacks and water and described "a very relaxed atmosphere" in the terminal.
By 10:00 AM EST, U.S. flights were slowly beginning to resume departures and a ground stop was lifted after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) scrambled to fix a system outage overnight that had forced a halt to all U.S. departing flights.
Moody's Investor Service airlines analyst, Jonathan Root, said the outage was "very unusual. I've covered this sector for over ten years, and this is the first time that I'm familiar with this system being unavailable."
The cause of the problem with a pilot-alerting system, which delayed thousands of flights in the United States, was unclear, but U.S. officials said they had so far found no evidence of a cyberattack.
