Don't forget back then in England it was the law for children by the age of 5 to learn how to use a bow, even men full grown it was mandatory to know how to use a bow,
Infact it was also mandatory that you practiced everyday, there is a reason english archers were so good and heavenly prized.

I think the very fact that we see such small eye slits is indication that they were very afraid of arrows

Fun fact, there were more than just a few battles from record where French knights were found with arrows lodged in their visors when going up against English longbowmen, so not only was this sorta thing possible; there's a good chance it happened more than we think.

Edit: While I did look for a while to find the video that I had seen, I could not find the blasted thing. I recall it being a LindyBeige video but for the life of me I cannot seem to find the one in which he mentions this tidbit. As many have mentioned however, Agincourt and Crècy did come up a lot when I was looking for other references. I do acknowledge that these battles had literally hundreds of thousands of arrows shot, as many have pointed out, and in all likliehood this certainly did play a huge role and likely where many of these shots could be from!

All that being said! I admit, it is a statistical anomaly, but; Lars Anderson is an absolutely insanely skilled archer and from what I understand he dedicated his life to this craft. And, knowing what we do know about MANY Longbowmen, many of them had their whole lives trained with a bow and drilled into their heads and muscle memory for years on end; some even decades. With all of that time and effort into the craft, I think there were times where skill became the factor rather than pure happenstance. There were many Longbowmen who made absolutely insane shots that we most certainly would call impossible, Hell there's many archers from many cultures that I believe could pull it off; I just recall from my admittedly horrid memory of a particular example in a video I had watched years ago now and thought it'd be a fun anecdote! So, sadly, I do not have a good source with which to satiate the intrigue; would that I could but it would seem this is a possibility that comes down to one's own faith in the matter. Stay intrigued folks, I bid you, adieu.

And remember that there's usually never just one archer but a whole group of em, and when you've got a whole gang of dudes essentially acting as a giant shotgun against an enemy formation, I bet the odds of somebody in that enemy formation getting an arrow in the eye was significantly above zero.

Suddenly, an arrow through 9 axes doesn't sound too farfetched anymore.

This is why I really like the Ranger’s Apprentice series. Half of the reason the Rangers are such a useful group of people is the fact that they’ve been training in the use of longbows since they were teenagers, and are extremely accurate with them and also very good at training other people to be good with bows as well. Then there’s the whole thing of a single contingent of Royal Araluen archers more or less defeating an entire rebellion single-handedly under a rangers command between them being super skilled and using hit and run tactics. It’s just such a fun series, I highly recommend it

I don't know about that. Longbows are really heavy and you need a lot of power to shoot it. It would be very hard to be accurate. You can even see in other videos of arrows vs armor that the guy shooting the actual bow is actually experienced and he can't shoot the eye slit when he aims for it. It would be a lucky shot but with the volume of arrows being shot drasticly increases the chance of it happening.

Never underestimate the skill of someone who's job it is to nail impossible shots like that and take a life. They weren't prized because they could shoot at range. You had a myriad of things to do that. They were prized because they could reliably take the shot.

It’s a lot harder to hit that eye socket when he’s on a horse charging you.

12 century Samurai Nasu no Yoichi is famous for hitting a fan placed atop of a pole on an enemy ship from his horse in the waves close to the shore that was over a hundred meters away in a single shot.

So yeah, historical archers were good
