Peds ER doc here. The other reason that we are forced to re-scan peds patients occurs when our own staff radiologists refuse to read "outside scans". This is likely due to a perception of potential liability, sprinkled with issues surrounding compensation. I haven't really seen repeat CTs ordered due to poor image quality, unless contrast wasn't given when it should have been. Bottom line here- if you are not going to use the imaging information to make clinical decisions at the time of your initial assessement, then don't order the test. We are not going to give you "points" for making the definitive diagnosis first. Lastly, we are all part of the same big team here. Timely communication is the key. And no one is going to criticize you for not ordering that scan. Thanks-
