Not only do the people criticising your daughter’s jeans write on the walls of public toilets, they also probably send the messages from their iPads in the spare bedroom of their mum’s home. Your daughter looks lovely.

Traditional ploughman’s goes back to 1950s when farmers worked out in the fields and consisted of Crusty bread, Cheese, Apple, cold meat ham or beef, scotch egg, pork pie, lettuce tomatoes, pickles, chutneys, and drink either beer or cider Somerset more likely cider

I think although the Ploughman's Lunch has been around around for a long time in British culinary culture - it really started to get promoted in the 1960s when the Milk Marketing Board started to push it.

To be honest, it can vary a bit - what with people adding ham, various pickles(Branston, Piccalilli, pickled onions, gherkin, etc.), various cheeses(Cheddar, Stilton - sometimes even Brie), the salad can vary a lot(coleslaw optional, spring onion seems popular on it), the bread also varies a bit (sometimes a roll, a baguette, even a ciabatta sometimes) - although I must admit that I have never seen it with a pork pie until I saw the ones you have tried.

Dont take any notice of nasty people who throw insults to make themselves feel better. Your daughter looks great and her jeans. Why would you want tight jeans in this weather? Your daughter has the same charisma as you, very relaxing to watch.A natural in front of the camera.

As I grew up on a farm and my father was the ‘ploughman’ as well as everything else - ‘a ploughman’s was whatever the my mother had put in the lunch box’ more often a hunk of cheese (my dad preferred Stilton or strong cheddar), doorstop of bread, defo pork pie, pickled onion, hard boiled farm eggs, sometimes an apple or a tomato or two and whatever we had. He like ham with his. We had them as school lunches back in the 70’s. That looked pretty good to me ploughman’s or just a good salad? It’s healthy and tastes great. 10/10

Got to say, on looks alone, the Diddly squat one looked better, better quality cheese and pork pie etc. BUT it was nearly double the price, so can’t really fault this one 👍

A ploughman's consist of bread, butter cheese and a pickled onion, certainly doesn't contain any meat or salad. Take them to trades description if they were claiming that was a ploughman's, it clearly wasn't, it was a huntsman lunch as it included ham.

It has to be large chunk of crusty bread, a good amount of butter, a large lump of cheese, not those small bits you were given, and a large pickled onion that bites you back. These are the 4 minimum parts of a ploughman's, anything without these can't be called a ploughman's. You can add an apple, pork pie, Branston pickle, , coleslaw, and if there's some room on the plate a small bit of salad, but salad is not necessary and not part of a ploughman's, cab also be left off the plate altogether

Lee to your question yes we can get a ploughman lunch here in Adelaide Australia but as I have been told it is not quite the same as in the uk. It was from a English themed pub in our city centre. Grier and Emma x

A ploughman's lunch is an English cold meal based around bread, cheese, and fresh or pickled onions.[1] Additional items can be added such as ham, green salad, hard boiled eggs, and apple, and usual accompaniments are butter and "pickle", which in Britain denotes a chutney-like condiment.[2] As its name suggests, it is most commonly eaten at lunchtime. It is particularly associated with pubs, and often served with beer.[1]

Beer, bread, and cheese have been combined in the English diet since antiquity, and have been served together in inns for centuries. However, the specific term "ploughman's lunch" is believed to date from the 1950s, when the Cheese Bureau, a marketing body, began promoting it in pubs as a way to increase the sales of cheese, which had recently ceased to be rationed. Its popularity increased as the Milk Marketing Board promoted the meal nationally throughout the 1960s.[3]

The 3 main ingredients are bread, cheese, and onion. Anything else like ham or a pork pie is basically an optional luxury, for lack of a better term

Ploughman's essentials: Crusty bread, cheddar cheese, ham, pork pie, pickle/chutney, salad items.

Optional extras could include: Egg/Scotch egg, pickled onions, coleslaw, perhaps a second type of cheese. Traditionally washed down with a pint of proper ale. Or cider if in the West Country.

The Titchfield offering was twice as good as Clarkson's, and for half the price. We shall be visiting there soon as everything they serve looks superb. Thanks for letting us all know.

hunk of cheese, such as cheddar or Stilton, crusty bread, butter, and a pickle or relish, often Branston pickle, a jarred pickled-vegetable relish. Popular additions include chutney, fruit, pickled onions, sliced ham, pork pie, a boiled egg, and pâté.
