In this video we'll take a closer look at the 50mm Summicron.
Instead of tech-specs, I'll show you photos taken using the 50mm Summicron.
Does this lens design hold up after 50 years? Is there still that classic rendering on a 40 megapixel sensor?
Find out in my video.

I've had my German Summicron for close to 30 years. Last year was my 50th year shooting professionally. Taking all parameters into consideration I say without reservation the 5th version is the finest 50mm lens ever produced. I started using it on the M6 and now use it on my M-P240 as well as on my Lumix S1R with an adaptor and at 47MP the images are stunning.

I started with Leica in 1980. I wandered into a suburban Chicago shop and found a nice black 50 Summicron. I bought it not knowing it was a version 3 not known to be a winner. I used it some and went on to something else religating V3 to storage. I found it again in 2023 and tried it on M10 finding it much to my liking. Serial # says it is one of 2000 made in 1969 so it is 50 years old and takes wonderful pics.
Back story I learned much later was shop owner always bought two of everything, one to sell, one for his collection. He happened to be on vacation when the attendant sold one of the new ones from the collection to me.

Was a leica dealer in the 80s visited the factory back then for 2 weeks, the precision of the glass grinding, selection of glass and assembly were at another level. Made prints 4 x6 ft with a focomat 2c. Try that with other optics..

I've the Summilux for my M-P240, which has just 24MP. More pixel means you see more details, or focusing must be much more precise for a pin sharp result. As press photographer, I'm setting my M-P240 at 12 MP. That's okay for press photos published digital only. If you don't need 40 MP, you'll get better results with the Summicron at a lover MP setting. Keep on rolling!

I replaced my 50mm Cron-M Ver. V with a 50mm Summilux-R ASPH. I ended up missing the Cron, but found a great deal on a 50mm Cron-R Ver. 2 from the late 70's that gives me the same rendering for less $.

Great stuff! I wonder how this ‘vintage’ lens would go on a Leica M8 set to black and white?

This is that classic leica look. I like rhe new lenses fine and they make a lot or sense for many people... but the classics are half the reason to go Leica at all, imo.

All the 50 you will ever need. Sold the APO-Lanthar for this. The Cron is like 3 lenses in one. Apo is the same thing from f2 to f11.

I have the version 5 of the 50mm Summicron, I have had it for many years. Want to try a lens that is superior at a fraction of the cost. Try a Voigtlander 40mm f/2.8 Heliar. I was stunned when I bought that lens, as you will be if you buy it too.
