Separated from their guide, Mansa Musa's caravan found themselves lost in the desert for several days. Despite their disorientation, they recognized the need to travel west, towards Mali.
Tragically, during their desert wandering, almost a third of the caravan perished, with soldiers, slaves, and camels falling victim to exposure or being captured by Bedouins. Eventually returning to Cairo, Mansa Musa encountered further troubles.
Having already spent much of his gold during his initial stay in Cairo, he had now suffered additional losses during their desert ordeal.
