In this #TimescaleTuesday video, Developer Advocate @ryanbooz demonstrates a new enhancement in TimescaleDB 2.1 that allows users to modify the schema of a compressed Hypertable. In previous versions of TimescaleDB, modifying the schema of a compressed hypertable required a lot of extra work that involved uncompressing all chunks, disabling compression, modifying the schema and then compressing everything again. For many users, this wasn't an acceptable limitation and so compression wasn't utilized.
With TimescaleDB 2.1, users can now freely add and rename columns, allowing them to use compression early in a project without being concerned that they will be locked into a specific schema.
