One interesting fact is the self contained cartridge hadn't been perfected for the first gattling guns. They used small single shot iron cylinders in 58caliber. Each cylinder had to be muzzle loaded with a paper rifle cartridge and primed with a cap. The iron cylinders were loaded like later cartridges were. I have no idea how a gas seal was achieved. I suspect it was pretty messy operation because of black powder fouling. I would really like to see a video on how they worked.
