As a dental assistant, you NEVER want to give an impression to someone laying down. The impression material will go back to the back of their throat and cause gagging.
Always have the patient lean forward while sitting up, so the material stays in place.
NEXT, allow the material to set a little so it’s not so goopy. This takes the set time down to under 30 seconds.
Less goop time, less gagging and happier patients

My daughter warned him before the impression that she gags really easy. He was boasting that he could do it without her gagging. She threw up on him and he was pissed. Lol she warned him.

I had this done when i was younger and it was such a horrible experience for me that years later, when i had to do it again, i told my dentist that i was really afraid of the whole process and was worried I’d unintentionally make it difficult for them by having a panic attack during the appointment. They listened and worked SUPER carefully, not overfilling the mold and letting me sit upright so i didn’t have to worry about it running down my throat. It was such a positive experience that i didn’t panic for even a second.

I had to get an impression so the dentist did this to me. I started gagging. The crown came out wrong. I had to get another impression but this time I went to another dentist and informed him about the gag. He then used the same thing but it was only one sided and I didn't gag at all. Thank GOD the dentist was cooperative. Now I only strictly visit the same dentist.

I’ve done a few impressions in my life, and I’ve never personally thrown up or even felt grossed out by it. At the same time it never really went down to the back of my throat or anything. I just sat there and chilled as they did their thing, and they seemed genuinely surprised that I was so calm about it. I’ll admit that it was a little uncomfortable, but it never really bothered me all that much.

I always found it odd that people threw up during impressions or bit their dentists 😭

I remember doing those a lot. I had a fantastic ortho tech, who was wonderful. She would always remind us to breathe and stay calm, because she knew the feeling of the gunk closing in was more scary than uncomfortable. Just breathe and remember to keep breathing and that it would harden quickly. And it did. I only ever gagged once, and she was right there being supportive and encouraging
