DC Did This To Themselves by Supporting Ezra Miller

The Flash is a box office bomb with a second weekend drop of about 75%. I think DC did this to themselves by supporting the very unpopular Ezra Miller. Today's video talks about Death of the Author which is a literary concept meaning to separate the author's biographical facts from the meaning of their work. I will apply this philosophical concept somewhat broadly in order to examine Ezra Miller and other celebrity actors who are infamous.

The fact that they kept Ezra Miller after firing Henry Cavill boggles the mind.

They are blaming the flop due to superhero fatigue...but Spider-Man across the spiderverse did bank. 🙄 so that tells me that DC challenged the fans by keeping and supporting and admitting to the fact that they NEVER even considered replacing Ezra. The fans spoke with their wallets

I would totally watch an hour long videos like this. These videos you make with more serious topics I always find myself wishing they were longer lol

I know you probably won’t see this but I just want to thank you for the decade+ of content. I started watching your videos back in the BO1 days and while I left CoD behind a long time ago, you’re one of the very few channels from back then that I still keep up with. Great video as always!

Philosophy with Drift0r is always a treat. I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos throughout the years, and not just in CoD.

I think its just as simple as a sunk cost fallacy. This movie has been on the backburner for awhile. It was supposed to come out as far back as 2018, riding off the "momentum" of the Justice League movie. But the critical reception to BvS, the twisting of Justice League, and all the clown parties since then have twisted this into a Frankensteins mess of reshoots, redirections and just burning studio money. It definitely doesn't *look* like it cost $300 million.

The best part is that they canned Batgirl for this, an already finalized movie.

The Kevin Spacey thing hurt me the most. He was my favorite actor and House of Cards was my favorite show. I rewatched HoC many times, but when the news came out, I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the final season.

I’ll push back on the JK Rowling thing. I don’t think saying that gender exists and is real and that there are differences between men and women is transphobic in any way. She wasn’t saying that trans women don’t exist, she simply said that the experience of a trans woman in no way is equitable to that of a biological woman that has lived the female experience for their entire life

James Gunn announcing the end of the Synder Verse really hurt them. Also, I believe timing hurt them too. Releasing the movie the same month as Across the Spiderverse was not a bright idea.

Your philosophical videos are always your best. I started watching you back in COD BO2 but I still follow you for videos like these.

Very well articulated my man, keep up the good work!
Me personally I find it impossible to separate the art from the artist as I see the art as a snapshot into the artists mind, wether for better or worse

The movie honestly looked pretty good, but I can’t I’m good conscience watch the movie in theatres and support him. Dude needs to be in jail.

9:00 this isn’t excluded from death of the author. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t include historical, political and cultural context, just that the author has no bearing on the interpretation.

It’s very specifically about literary analysis, which is why parts of this video kinda falls flat. It’s very weird, especially when you have works like the annotated version of Lolita, which was done in collaboration with the author. Can/ should we ignore the notes?

Supporting an artist or making a value judgement on their work based on their character and actions is different, but gets rolled in, and that’s an entirely personal decision.

It’s becoming harder and harder to separate the art from the artist. Being a terrific artist but a terrible human being, one eventually bleed into the other. Kevin Spacey is a perfect example, it’s hard to even look at the guy now, but his body of work is amazing.

Hey Drift0r, been a long time subscriber and I absolutely loved this video. The video actually touched on a lot of views you'd find in the literature of the philosophy of fiction! It's interesting you mentioned that it doesn't matter how aesthetically great a work of art initially seems when either (1) it advocates for an immoral message or (2) the artist of the work has committed heinous crimes. Some philosophers argue a work that satisfies (1) or (2) actually detracts from the aesthetic value of an art work. Satisfying conditions (1) or (2) counts as a defect towards the artwork's aesthetic value. This view is called moralism and it can be found all the way back to Plato and David Hume. I wonder what your thoughts on that view are. Anyways, this video was great and I hope you're doing well!

Ez fix: Dont watch content with Ezra Miller in it. I know it sucks but they only make money when people watch. Your time is the only leverage you have over these massive companies.

What blows my mind is that they made a flash move but didnt take the cast from the TV show. That movie wouldve immediately blew up had they done that

Regarding Rowling, I'd contend you're mis-characterising her. I trust you've read her objections to the Scottish self ID bill that was proposed and subsequently dropped. In that, you wouldn't find anything anti-trans contained within.
As to the company of which she keeps or has stood next (in the literal, physical sense), if that is what irks you, then I'm sure there are countless famous people who've been papped too that could be lumped in too.
