How to get 'STRAIGHT' lines in your photos: Quick Tip

How many times have you seen someone leaning so far back they look like they are about to fall over?

How many times have you seen someone trying to shoot a vertical picture and not only do they turn the camera but they turn their entire head?

How many times have you seen someone laying on the ground in an awkward position and you know they wont be getting their line straight?

The moral of the story is keep your head straight at all times and you shouldn't have any issues making sure your lines are straight.

I love having an electronic level built into the camera now.  But now the problem is landscapes where the horizon is angled and you have to decide of reality or percieved level is more important.

For lower shots, I like to use a squatting position (which does look awkward, admittedly). I can tuck my elbows between my thighs/inner knee for extra stability. Plus, it's quick to get into. Looks like I'm taking a crap, but the photos are always "straight".

Super Great Tip!!

By the way if you don't mind asking, are you not shy making tips when you are at the public places and what made you to be confident making them in public?

sometimes you have to learn back because you need to get the comp right you need to be abit wider.

Wow reminds me of a Ron Jon's shoot I was on where one their photographers was doing moves like this even hanging off railing to get the shots she even shot upside down. I don't do any of those cause they totally look ridiculous. The worse I have done is the lean back. Thanks for the tip and the giggle.

I am confused. As long as I am photographing a straight line, it will be straight in the picture independent of the angle or position from which I shoot it.

But what if you have no option to tilt your head to one side? You've not seen the size of my nose, it's like Concorde has been re-enlisted for action.

Didn't you do the laying on your side/back during the pizza D5500 shoot?

lol eh what ever works best for each person and situation. I had to carefully lay on my back in some broken glass the other day to get a shot over at graffiti pier. Actually I encourage getting out of comfort zones. Getting out of the comfort zones usually means getting into perspectives others were either too lazy, scared, or unimaginative to do. Yes people passing by probably think I look ridiculous but I don't care because I'm working on my art and going somewhere most don't dare to go. My hard work pays off in shots no one else dared to get.

Funny thing is I saw a guy laying on the floor today trying to capture a photo of an old building. He looked like a contortionist crossed with a wacky photographer. I believe there are easier ways to get good angles and stabilisation just like Fro suggests here. 👍

When ever I go into the prone position I feel like I am going to sniper somebody #vetproblems . . . with that said I have no issues using the prone position (plus you take up less room and more stable)
