Expert on unexplained hepatitis outbreak cases in children

On Monday, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated a spreading hepatitis outbreak that’s now killed six children nationwide. And expanded to 180 reported youth patients across the country. Four children in NJ are among them. The outbreak is top of mind for medical experts during this Hepatitis Awareness Month because it largely goes undetected.

Thank you for the video. Unfortunately this report is a little bit unclear, as it begins talking about the mysterious hepatitis outbreak in children and ends with the hepatitis virus awareness.
Just to clarify, the unknown hepatitis outbreak, in its working clinical definition, is NOT caused by any of the known hepatitis viruses. Instead it is thought to be cause by a common cold virus, adenovirus-41. We do not have a treatment for the virus itself, but we do have treatment for common cold symptoms. We also do not have a vaccine that is protective against adenovirus.
There are many working theories as to the specific cause of the outbreak, however adenovirus-41 was found in most cases.
I would like to point out that it is very unlikely related to being vaccinated. 11 early documented cases in Ireland were all children who had not been vaccinated for COVID-19, the vast majority of the cases in the U.S. had not been vaccinated for COVID-19, and with a median age of 2, most of these children could not have been legally vaccinated in the first place.
Instead, some scientists are investigating if a prior COVID-19 infection could have made the children more susceptible to liver damage due to adenovirus-41. However, this is difficult to prove because viral particles do not last forever in the tissue that they infect.
