I watched this and other videos to understand literary structuralism. But I remained at a loss; always wondering why no one makes it simple by giving an example or two of how literary structuralism works. Then I came across a book and I realised that this mysterious approach of looking at literature is actually very simple. Structuralism in literature refers to the genre. That's all. Fairy tales, tragedies, love stories, adventure, horror etc are all genres and all have similar patterns. For example, in a detective story, very typically there's a cop/detective who is solving a crime and at the end the culprits are exposed. In fairy tales, typically we have a princess who is rescued by a prince, with fairies and an evil witch/entity playing a particular role. The forces of good win at the end. Structuralism just looks at these larger patterns. We all know this. It is unfortunate that those trying to explain structuralism will talk about a bunch of theories but will seldom give an example of what literary structuralism means.
