A PRACTICAL WAY TO CHOOSE YOUR DIRECTION IN LIFE

What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

The last 'think' video I made created so many comments and good discussions which in some ways is better than a million views. You asked for more - so here is another bit of thinking from the murky depths of my brain.

'WHAT DO I DO WITH MY LIFE?' is an endlessly asked question muddied with the irritating need to survive in the meantime. It is something I have constantly asked myself and over the years, I have done all sorts of things - from inventing medical products to lobbying for prison reform and SaaS software start-ups. These were all great in terms of learning and development but I have found that the more I make drastic changes and fully commit to what I find deeply interesting - opposed to what is fairly interesting and has a more direct connection to making money - the better my life has become and the more it feels like what I spend my time doing is in line with who I am.

So, I am doubling down on this in 2020. If it is really interesting I will do it. If it is not so interesting I won't move my life in that direction. Simples. Let's see if it works.

I hope you enjoyed this tour, don't forget to help us out by liking and subscribing :)

That's one of the reasons I follow your Channel not interested whatsoever in rock climbing but I love your enthusiasm towards life and passion about what you're doing the van thing brought me to your Channel I see in you what I used to see in myself no fear of the unknown I'm 59 now no big interest in anything hoping I can find passion something again thanks for what you do

At 50+ I'm so grateful to my 10-year-old self who saw close up, and understood, what being old and regretting your whole life does to a person. That 10yo kid vowed to never allow herself to become that person, and to never settle with what's expected of you. 40+ years later, I now know that life may take you down some paths where you will have to compromise. And down other paths where you will have to be patient. But as long as what you do makes sense to you, even those paths can be interesting and offer invaluable learning curves. I'm now at a point where I'm reasonably certain I'll never regret any stage of my life, and that feels pretty awesome. I'm so glad you're talking about this, Nate, and using your platform to show people there is more to life than making money and meeting other people's goals. Thank you and Happy New Year! 🎉

Thanks for this video—it’s something I remind my kids everyday in hopes that they will find whatever it is that makes their soul sing.

The reason why I happened on your channel (via your restoration video) is that, at 60, after having bought an old house in the french countryside with the intention of restoring it, I realised that I had let other things in my (our) life get in the way of actually beginning the work. I had made other things (less interesting!) a priority. I was starting to believe it would never get done. Then I realised the only thing stopping me moving forward and doing what I love to do was... ME. I have changed my mindset and felt a lightness ever since. Your renovation has kicked my passion and determination into high gear and I thank you for that. Oh and another thing, while watching the restoration video, I was struck by your calm, almost zenlike demeanor, I guess you appeared that way because you were doing something you loved.

True, people don't regret not making more money. They do regret not travelling more, not spending enough time with their loved ones, not pursuing their passions. You know what you need to do all those things? Yes, when you examine it really closely, it usually boils down to money. And pressure.

Rather than say 'pursue what's interesting to you', I'd say 'ask yourself why you're doing what you're doing right now'. Internalise and examine it and make sure you know the answer. It helps making peace with oneself without resorting to egocentrism.

This has made me think. I probably need to respond to this in some way but I must take some time to consider it. Thankyou for posting it.

mate, never ever comment on here but found your channel from looking into van life. This video just made complete sense to me - think you've articulated this happiness concept really well. I work a corporate job, paid well, but which I'm not overly fond of, and this is motivation to start pulling at some interest strings to find my passion. Cheers for this

Fantastic content Nate. Another video that should be doing massive numbers. Takes most of us a lifetime or two, at least, to figure these things out. Really precious advice. I like much of your content, but this little series of videos, is, for me, the most valuable, and your best work. ❤️ 👌👍

Taking the plunge this year, should finish my van and will be retiring early to follow my passion / interest - Photography, so bit late in life but 100 % agree with you, you need to do 'it' or regret it later. keep up the videos finding the house build fascinating.

Yes Nate, yes!!! This is super inspiring, your theory on following your interests is such a well explained notion, it’s something I believe in very strongly myself, but never really manage to put into words when it comes to talking about it with others! So I’m definitely going to quote you on this in the future. Also, kudos to you for really just living your best life and building your own stuff, in my opinion, you’re doing it the right way and you’re one of the few lucky ones who has figured out that doing something for yourself which may seem selfish at first, actually gives back to a larger community, as you’re a better person!! I have so much respect for everything you’re sharing, wishing you the best for this coming year but for the rest of your life in general too, much love!

I completely agree with you! Follow your interests, make them happen and if it fills you up that's perfect, and if it doesn't just keep trying. There are limitless options in life and I believe and always tell everyone, specially children, that they don't have to be focus in only one thing, in only one profession to study, in only one career. You can be a firefighter, a teacher and a chef. Life is not that short. And it's never to late to change the direction of your life.
Best wishes for 2020!

I think the reason most people don’t pursue interesting is a combination of fear and an in willingness to sacrifice and endure hardship.

They trade easy and meeting societal expectations for trinkets and flash cars and then wonder why they end up depressed and addicted to what ever gives them comfort

I include myself in this, I was 40 and it took the birth of our severely disabled child to shake up our lives and drive change. 10 years later we couldn’t be happier and every year we challenge ourselves with scary projects and new adventures, all of which give our lives meaning and certainly keep it interesting!

Great video and insight, loving following your adventures

Thought-provoking video for sure. The strings of interest is where I'm stuck at the moment. I have traveled, I have worked and now I study a MSc in entrepreneurship because I really don't know what I want to do still. I do know it's not an intellectual challenge to think my way through the problem of what I want to do, but I kind of hope to find out what do do next soon.
