The appearance day of Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, is celebrated worldwide by ISKCON centres as Vyasa Puja. This celebration honours his extraordinary achievements and contributions to the world, serving as an expression of deep gratitude.
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born in 1896, on the day of Nandotsava, the day after Sri Krishna Janmashtami. As the 32nd Acharya in the disciplic succession (parampara) descending from Srila Vyasadeva, he is revered as a representative of Srila Vyasadeva.
At ISKCON Vaikuntha Hill, Vasanthapura, the festivities are held in the morning. Devotees read their written offerings of heartfelt gratitude and glorification to Srila Prabhupada. On this sacred occasion, the Vyasa Puja Homage book containing these homages is released and offered to him. Devotees also prepare and bring a variety of delicious offerings with devotion and love for His Divine Grace. A grand abhisheka is performed to Srila Prabhupada, and the celebration concludes with Guru Puja and the distribution of maha prasadam.
Srila Prabhupada dedicated his life to spreading Krishna consciousness throughout the world. At the age of 69, following the instruction of his guru, His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he journeyed to America in 1965 to disseminate the teachings of Lord Krishna and established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Over the next 12 years, he travelled extensively, delivered hundreds of lectures, engaged in discussions with distinguished personalities, authored numerous books on the science of Krishna consciousness, and established 108 Krishna temples.
Srila Prabhupada’s life exemplifies unwavering devotion to Lord Krishna, dedication, and sacrifice in spreading the Vedic teachings for the betterment of humanity.
