I was just reminded that the Guinness Book of Records once gave the most expensive fruit as being a grape sold for GBP 700, in order to circumvent the Sunday trading law of the time by giving a statue of Apollo worth £700 free with it. I imagine that the seller's words were something like this: "I can't sell you this now, because it's a Sunday. But what I can do is sell you this grape for £700, and give you the statue as a freebie with it."

I believe this in the early 1990s. So the fruits shown here must only have come about, or only become so expensive, since this time.
