Montrose: A Ghost Story (Part Two)

In part one I told the tale of a phantom pilot who once wandered the old Montrose Airfield in Angus, Scotland, and I briefly touched upon the life of the pilot it was thought to be. However, There is a second story linked to Montrose. Many believe that the apparition in this story is also Desmond Arthur, but others say that this is a completely separate case.

I lived in Montrose for many years, and walked the dog virtually daily down the 'drome, once my young son and I watched a khaki clad man head to a partly demolished building in the centre of the 'drome. We never thought anything much of it until an elderly man told me that the building was used for testing the planes guns into. Another time when my husband and his fellow golfers were really annoyed that a bi-plane buzzed them while on the far end of the golf course, the golf course runs parallel between the sea and the 'drome, by this time I'd heard the ghost stories and told him what they'd seen. The aerodrome still has many of its air raid shelters still surviving, but the look outs on the tops of the dunes have sadly succumbed to coastal erosion and don't exist anymore. It and the brilliant museum is well worth the visit, and the sighting happen regularly.

I’m going to relate a true story told in the book “Ordinary Naval Airman” by HJC Spencer. It will otherwise be lost to posterity.
At Royal Naval Air Station Easthaven in WW2, some 15 miles south of Montrose, flying training was going on simulating take-offs and landings on an aircraft carrier. A section of the runway, of appropriate dimensions had been taped off.
One young pilot, Ian “Lefty” Batten was at the controls of a Fairly Firefly. Ian, a teenage New Zealander, had worked his passage on a tramp steamer back to the mothercountry when war broke out and joined the Fleet Air Arm.
Several times Ian had successfully completed the exercise but an officer decided more realism was necessary. He ordered that the Station bus be parked on the silhouette to simulate the “island” on an aircraft carrier. The next time Ian landed, a sudden crosswind on the exposed runway caused the Firefly’s wingtip to connect with the bus. The plane crashed in a fireball and Ian was killed.
His grave is in Arbroath Western Cemetery. His sacrifice deserves to be remembered. We should never forget just how risky flying training for war was and that thousands died just in accidents.

It's very fascinating. I read the Ghosts of the Air. Very haunting and sad for the deaths of so many young men during war times.

I wonder if there are little trolls going from video to video giving them a thumbs down, because I can’t see the fault in most I watch. I think the people who make these work hard at making them entertaining as well as educational.

That was brilliant! And I was particularly interested to read at the end that the haunting of poor Arthur, is the only haunting to be officially recognised by the British Government!! Must have been a lot of evidence and witness statements for them to take it so seriously. Never knew the Government registered things like this. Really appreciate all the time spent in researching this story, and your excellent presentation...look forward to more like this in the future please ! 👍😘🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Excellent storytelling again - you really have a talent for it.
Creepy as hell - I can't imagine being on guard duty on a bleak East Coast night.

The ghost definitely still walk the airfield. Had a friend tell me he saw one of the ghosts during a trip to the airfield during his tour of WW1 & WW2 locations in Britain.

It occurred in 2015. He said he witnessed a man in WW2 flight gear walking near one of the hangers. My friend said he thought it was an old veteran from WW2 visiting the site. He saw the man was walking fast and right before he rounded the corner out of view my friend said “Thank you for your service”. The man stopped, turned, saluted, and then turned the corner. When my friend tried to catchup and turned the corner there was no one there.

He said looking back on it when you remembered the man turning around and saluting him he said he doesn’t remember seeing his face or if he even could see one, he said it was dark and thought the man was in the shadows of the hanger’s roof.

I keep an open mind on events such as these, but regardless all these men deserve to be remembered.

Your commentaries are far better than the BBCs' and way ahead of ITV and the History channel. Great choice of words and no biases, excellent!

I had to drive a 400km round trip today - long distances on flat road in Australia - a beautiful coastline and your stories kept an otherwise tedious drive very entertaining. Thankyou.
