One day they will dig a little deeper and find the horses they are all riding. 😆

I remember when I was a kid learning about the statues I said something along the lines of “maybe the rest of them are underground” and got laughed at. Learning I was right years later felt nice

Edit: I just realized that everyone in my class probably thought I was joking.

Back in the 80's I knew they had bodies because they discovered that in 1914 and I was into archeology as a kid.

Imagine what’s on the “old” ground level for artifacts

It's always been known by anyone who bothered to take a passing interest in Rapanui, that the statues have bodies as well. The island is literally, littered, with dozens of statues that fell over before the Rapanui managed to get them to the shoreline. They don't even need to be excavated, they're just laying there, for anyone to see

The inscriptions on their back translated: “Made You Dig”

I was on Easter Island 23 years ago and it was well known that they have bodies. Many unfinished statues are still in place in the quarries and the bodies can be clearly seen. The tree trunks needed to roll the statues to site ran out when the islanders had chopped down pretty much all the trees, so they couldn't be moved. What's probably happening here is that they've excavated some of the ones in situ for the first time.

This wasn't found in 2010; Thor Heyerdahl published his expedition when I was a kid in the 1960's. A couple of these photos here of the excavations are from that book..

My upbringing in America makes me only see all these as Squidward’s house.

Can you imagine the epic stretching you'd do after being uncovered after all that time.

When European explorers asked the few remaining natives how they got there, the response was "They walked "
Turns out they rocked them into a walking motion with ropes and rhythmic pulling. They really did "walk".

So probably some of them are buried fully

Thor Heyerdahl and his team dug these statues up in the 70's.

We all knew the rest was buried, we just needed someone to pay these guys to dig it up lol

I remember seeing a Far Side cartoon in the early 90s iirc, which was about scientists digging under an Easter Island head, and finding the rest of the statue....😅

It's neat to see the original color of the stone too. Very different from the dark color we've always seen.

The designs carved into them may represent the tattooing on the body of the person that each statue represents.

Changing soil? It was part of lemuria. It suffered covering during the flood.
