Coronavirus outbreak: What is hazard pay and why is it important during this pandemic?

Many businesses around the world have closed down temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still a lot of places which must remain open, such as grocery stores and hospitals, as they are considered essential services, and essential workers are at a higher risk of being exposed to the novel coronavirus. Petitions and demonstrations have popped up globally demanding more support and better compensation for these essential workers, including hazard pay. But, what is hazard pay and why is it so important during this pandemic?

I work for the electric company keeping everyone's light's on, since everyone is home now, I deal with the population 100% more now. People are trying to approach me every day all day... I've even had the cops called on me for working on the lines! Some of these people are going crazy!!! Nobody is staying home like they're supposed to. Everyone seems to be on a paid vacation, while I work for regular pay and getting harassed at work...

Need a living wage, not a minimum wage. Hazard pay needed for health care people interacting with covid-19. Sue China for costs. Living wage needs to cover cost of profit for housing, food and health care and dentistry. Everyone should earn at least enough to save 10-30% at end of month.

once the essential workers are taken care of, the message should be to provide PPE to the general public so they can get back to their lives relatively safely

The essential workers don't work then you don't eat...they are taking care of your family and loved ones..why on Earth should they not get something ?..they keep things going and risking their own life's to do it. Not to mention they have no time to relax and get comfortable. Run run run..God help. This is an unnecessary question. It's obvious..only fair to all that have to work during this time. God help. Let’s not also forget about our transportation workers who are working on our subways and Amtrak. Our conductors, engineers, track workers and OBS/café attendants who have no choice but to place themselves risk of getting sick and spreading sickness to others to keep people going from one place to another

Cancelling their income taxes for the duration could be just as good as hazard pay and may have less costs. In the end, they both mean more money in your paycheck.

Hazard pay does not protect the workers, it simply incentivize them to take the risks. Hazard pay is just a way to discount concerns by employees.
