It's time. The third installment of the StarCraft song trilogy.
Special thanks to my Patreon supporters who helped make this Legacy of the Void Starcraft 2 song happen.
Lyrics:
You were made
twisted like our fate,
blades
carved out your name,
here's the trade:
sunlight on your face,
the exchange:
a friendship I sank,
you were saved,
you were safe.
I will follow
a ghost that I once knew,
you were lost
in the swarm I just saw you,
I had no choice,
I had no choice,
I've wanted you for so long,
so I will follow you
into the void.
In the dark
a faceless god at work,
we are
his cycle to purge,
we are all
linked in psionic chains,
the Khala
corrupted by his hate,
cut me off.
I will follow
a friend that I once knew,
you were lost
yeah, the overmind and you,
you were gone,
you were gone,
you were gone for so long,
but I will follow you
into the void.
Of essence, of essence
purity of form,
of essence, of essence
you will be reborn.
I will follow
a ghost that I once knew,
you were lost
in the swarm I just saw you,
I hear your voice,
I hear your voice,
"Are you ready cowboy?"
I will follow you
into the void.
Spoiler alert below if you haven't played LOTV (Legacy of the Void, the third StarCraft2 game)!
We return to Kerrigan and Raynor's heart-rending, twisted yet strangely beautiful love story, the intrigues of the Protoss prophecies with overtures to Zeratul, Artanis, Tassadar (well, actually the Xel'naga Ouros), as well as Kerrigan's bittersweet redemption in saving the world from Amon and the mysterious reunion with Jim after her transformation.
I'm not sure why StarCraft pulls so much out of me. I certainly enjoy the gameplay, realtime strategy that's very much like adrenaline-fueled space chess. It's also a wild tale with characters I've known for two decades; Kerrigan's story in particular is one of the most turbulent, ever. She's betrayed, betrays, she's disfigured then transfigured--she's a force for good, then evil, becomes a hate-filled monster of vengeance, then claws her way back to redemption and the one she loves. I don't know, I can't even read that sentence without feeling a little swell of emotion.
And I certainly dream of a future where we're navigating the stars, watching different suns rising on alien worlds, and encountering new forms of life. And if it was intelligent? It makes my blood bubble with excitement.
But it's more than that. I also think the story has symbolic ideas that are bigger than the particular instance in the game (galactic in scale as it is!). For example, the Khala, a telepathic link between all minds, allows us to explore the concept of individuality from a radical perspective, and from this new vantage we gain important understanding. This is one of the most sacred purposes of art.
Yes, I'm calling a video game art. It is, they are. Interactive art.
And with this, we close the (final?) chapter on a game I've loved since I was a kid. Thanks for all the memories, StarCraft.
