Testing the FS700: Dynamic Range

When Sony dropped off the new FS700 at AbelCine for some quick tests, we put it to work right away. We wanted to test many things, but focused on low-light performance, dynamic range, and the camera's slow-motion options. The FS700 is an updated model of the FS100, so much of our testing also compared these two cameras.

For the second test I wanted to see the dynamic range of the camera, so we put it on the scopes to see how it did. The FS700 has much the same dynamic range as the FS100 (11.5 stops), but with the addition of Cine gamma modes. These modes give a nice smooth roll-off in highlights, which can be seen in some of the footage above.

thank you so much for not doing another slow motion shot. I've been dying to see what this camera actually looks like when used normally. I really think people are going to over kill the slow motion crap with this camera.

@rayhanurkabir The reason we shot so much footage of bricks was to look for aliasing. I didn't see any aliasing problems in the full quality version of this footage. Though I did test the camera on some zone plates and was able to see a good amount of aliasing, a real world test seemed more appropriate. The camera is made for both 4k and HD use, so it would not be unusual to see some problems with moire in high frequency patterns. -- Andy

This is a great camera, but I find it to be pretty soft with the images.. If you do some colour correcting and bring the contrast up a bit, it usually helps. If you shoot indoors you will see some noise in lower light situations as in weddings
