Ladoum: The Star Sheep, by filmmaker Moussa Diallo, transports us into the business of breeding and selling prize Ladoum sheep in Senegal.

In Dakar, Abou Kane runs his business breeding the expensive, smooth-haired sheep from an urban sheepfold - an impressive sheep hostel in the city.

He shows off his famous ram, Ameth Amar, and we eavesdrop on the deals and discussions of the business. This is an unexpected part of Dakar life, with sheep as the stars.

Moussa Diallo is an experienced screenwriter and director and a respected figure in the Senegalese audiovisual sector. He was involved in writing several films, including Tundu Wundu, Wara, and Dérapages. He is based in Dakar.

That was a fabulous piece. I was dreading a slaughter scene, but only a birthing scene.

€50, 000 for a top breeding ewe is an extraordinary price, and Amar the top breeding male is not for sale—just yet.

I had often heard about humans cohabiting with their livestock, and this showed how it is done today, and in some luxury.

Sheep farmers in my country can only exist by having flocks of many thousands of sheep, this farmer does it with less than 100. The joys of being a farmer of fine breed stock.

Interesting to see a meat breed (as opposed to a wool breed) of sheep being raised in a protected environment.
I'm so used to seeing sheep & goats in fields being watched over by dogs and humans, or in barns during intense weather, but then this breed is highly sought after so of course they are kept in enclosures alot of the day!
I was wondering about their temperament, they seem pretty mild, and not very noisy too.
It's amazing what sheep can provide to people, and have done for thousands of years.
Good story, Al Jazeera.
