The fuel consumption at the same thrust would be the exact same if they were equally as efficient. The smaller engine is likely more efficient at that thrust since it is probably running closer to its design thrust. Also, the larger engine is heavier, so to get the same performance from the plane, you would need slightly more thrust.

You would want to pick the engine that is running closest to its optimum (most efficient) operating point during typical flight. The engine makers should be able to supply an efficiency vs thrust graph for each engine.

In any IC engine, the efficency is a function of compression ratio before the combustion section. A larger diameter turbine should produce higher compression at the same RPM and thus should have higher efficiency. Modern full scale turbines with multiple stage axial flow compressor sections achieve very high compression ratio and relatively high efficiency. These small turbines with a one stage centrifugal compressor will always be relatively inefficient because of the inherently limited compression ratio but they produce higher compression at higher RPM so are most efficient at near their maximum RPM. so a larger diameter turbine at lower RPM to match thrust with a smaller diameter turbine at higher RPM will probably be operating at lower compression ratio and efficiency.

Great YTs Jonathan! Thanks for all your invested time and shared topics. 🙂And yes, I too find these solder sticks quite amazing.h the RC world.

A diesel v kero test would be interesting as well . Keep up the great work Jon. Solder on

Hey Jon. a fellow Albertan saying hello, and sending out a big thanks for your content. I have a million questions for you, but I don't think this is the place for them. Maybe I will ask a couple of them on your new channel, as I will subscribe there as well. I am just getting back into the hobby after years and years away, and to say I have some plane envy would be a real understatement. Just got a new Radiomaster TX16s radio, and that is a bit of a learning curve, but nothing compared to 3D printers, and Laser Engravers I am sure! It has been fun watching you grow your business into the kind of thing that you love to do, and that hopefully provides you with a viable livelihood as well, so kudos. Perhaps once I learn to solder things properly Ill make some better headway in creating my own dream business. Until then Ill just keep watching and enjoying!

Thanks for all you do. Steven H. Member of Larks flying club in Edmonton!

PS Solder. Solder, solder.

Nice video as usual, I also solder fuel barbs on all my brass fuel tubing so the fuel line has a ridge to slide over.

I love to solder! This looks pretty handy. And thanks for the great video! I feel like turbine engines have an exponential thrust and fuel consumption line vs a piston engine is more linear. Your theory is likely true with piston engines, but i wasn’t expecting it to be LESS efficient doing the same test with turbines!

Using the SOLDER STICK, makes it fun and easy to solder wires together.

At the end of the day, I must always tell myself “Chris, you must solder on”! Great video Jonathan. Like you, I totally expected different results!

Hi Jonathan,
Interesting results. Wouldn't mine having some more of those Solder Sticks.

Just made a solderstick order using your discount code. Absolute bargain with free shipping to the UK!
Hopefully, from now on, my solder jobs will be painless!

As a kid I had a hard time differentiating between the words, solder and soldier, so I wondered what soldier iron was.

I learned to solder when I started to build quads.

I was surprised too, but been there before, I thought as you untill I flew "similar" planes and weight on a JC Cheetah 160 vs JC Rhino 250, flying the last one at 40 % most of the flight on first flight run out of Kero (on my Bull!)....would be nice to compare Kero vs Diesel !

Solder is still the best way to connect power leads. These little devices make your life super easy, especially in confined spaces.

I've been looking into getting some soldersticks to test. Im an old-school """solder"""" and built my own rc systems for my aircraft and drones on a encoded and out of normal approved frequencys for rc. More range and power.

I solder copper pipe and fittings for my house’s water supply system. Will these “sticks” work for that?

I solder on a regular basis. These parts are a huge time saver.
