One idea to help slow speeding automobiles? Build a bike lane. #zerovision #cycling

A huge thanks to my sponsors this year. They support this channel, so please support them. They also make amazing products that I use every day and endorse without hesitation.

Priority Bikes: I happily rode Priority for years before they signed on as a sponsor this year.

I don’t really do proper product reviews, but here are some products that I’ve tried on this channel that I like. (Of course, you don’t need anything fancy to ride a bike, other than a bike, but these are Amazon affiliate links, and I get paid a small commission if you buy them 😉)

If only it was so easy to get various municipalities to do this. Where I live, it's a bloody nightmare to ride on roads, but I do it anyway. I would love some dedicated bike infrastructure.

Today I biked over 22 miles on a trail and it was amazing. The longest I have ever ridden. I long for more safe ways to travel by bike. 🚴🏽 I may drive to Asbury to see the bike lanes. Thank you for the share. 😊

we need self enforcing design, not speed limit signs. if you have to put a sign up for the speed to be enforced, you’ve designed your street improperly. +1 that bike lanes and other traffic calming measures can be self enforcing design

I wish my community would embrace bike lanes. I saw some in a recent video that used slow growing short trees to separate the bike lane from the car lanes. It looked fantastic.

I didn't read the study, but expect that the effect may more likely be due to the road being or appearing to be narrower rather than because it's a bike lane.
I live near and regularly use a road with a painted cycle lane, cars regularly exceed the 30mph speed limit.
Didn't the Dutch make many city/residential roads narrow to reduce traffic speed?

Narrow streets are cheaper and safer...

This is one of those things that's obvious in retrospect not somehow it's not something we talk about much. 👏👏👏

There's always this poo-pooing of "painted" bike lanes, meaning for me they're fashioned only with paint markings. Alright so I get that this kind isn't ideal especially for the safety of the bike riders, however I see a big difference between lane color painted (green, red, etc.) and merely white lines. The former is practically non-existent in most places in the USA, while the latter is the default minimum that cities do. The color catches the attention of drivers, and therefore the presumption is that they respond to that better. Even with no "protections" at all, I'd be massively thrilled if I ever saw these being laid out where I live, being that much of an improvement.

I wish that were true in my area. Cars are still going 35mph in a 25mph residential zone with painted bicycle lanes on both sides of the road. Parking on one side of the road. One lane in either direction.

It's not that the researchers are from Bruce Springsteen's hometown of Asbury Park, it's that it's near New Brunswick NJ, where Rutgers U has its main campus. (Class of 1994, myself). Nice reference to the Boss, Tom!

One thing I wish would change about cars is how their gear ratios make certain speeds more comfortable to maintain. Like I'd love if it was easier to keep my car going 20 mph but it really wants to get up to 30-35mph.

A stellar collateral effect, if ever there was one.

Trees and hedges, between the street and bike lane would probably help a lot as well, because it makes the street appear even narrower and most driver wouldn't want to drive into a tree. The hedges would also help with noise and better air quality for cyclists and pedestrians.

The best we can hope for sometimes. We have to sacrifice ourselves, literally.
Measured in percentages, we can only hope to slow and reduce. Stop and remove is unachievable.
So we are bullied into share the road, guniea pigged into reinforcing paint, and all for a modest percentage of safety.
Safety> Efficiency> Increased demand! It's all good.

In my city a cycling tsar has been employed costing $100K pa but 3 years later we don’t even have cycle routes showing up on Google Maps yet.

I love that you're not looking directly into the sun in this video.

I always chuckle when i see all the motorist comments about insane speeders nedding to be stopped (not realizing they are part of that group). Then when a real impactful solution appears, other than police rounding up THOSE people, they lose their minds and complain having to drive slower (closer to the posted speed limit).

I've noticed I drive slower ever since I started biking more. So many people are used to traveling with a gas pedal and windows, they don't realize just how fast 20 mph really is. Seeing someone travel slower may incentivize others to slow their roll.
People needlessly speed because that's what they're so used to. Speed is an illusion to them because they have a windshield.

I'm curious if speeds will increase over time when drivers in the area get used to bike lanes being there.
