As ex-military I went to Zone Rouge for training. It is eerie, everyone could feel that aura of death and misery. It looked like you were on the moon, nothing grows there.

I want to offer a correction. It is not illegal to visit the DMZ. As someone who was stationed in South Korea, I can attest to the fact that they regularly had trips there. I attended with a civilian guest back in 2005.

Update: About Varosha, Cyprus.
Yes, it was occupied and not only this city but actually half of Cyprus including half of the capital of Nicosia. You still could visit other occupied areas and they even provide tours.
As standing from this year 2022 first time after being occupied that it is allowed to visit Varosha and even walk around, of remaining city and even have a swim in the lovely bay. Now there is a lot of tours provided to visit the occupied area and it’s fully safe.

My dad used to work on the base at the high school on Fort Knox. I can still remember driving by it and it all being fenced up. He even said at one point there used to be an active sniper if anyone would trespass.

I’ve been to the DMZ before when I was stationed in Korea. It was told to us that the guy standing over to the left side of that building in the north side. They said there is a 50cal behind him and if someone crosses over, all that guy does is slides to the side and the guy behind him opens fire.

I did a 30 mile ruck march near the Z while stationed in A Korea. We were literally walking near landmine zones and any of us could've fallen and got blown up at any moment in those 11 hours.
