Flying buttresses. A regular buttress would usually be flush against the structure. The buttresses, being added stonework for support, would block out a significant amount of light. Flying buttresses being spaced the way they are allows more light into the cathedrals they were typcially used on.

Annoying "fun" fact about Cologne Cathedral: It's actually not 100% symetrical.
2 of the 2 lower rows of Windows on the South side of the South Tower are actually just kinda cut in half because for somereason there are 2 rows of Buttresses which covers half of those windows.
I randomly noticed that on Google maps and it's kind of bugging me because it's not like that on the North side of the North Tower

Oh and the Big rose window-ish thing in the Big Pointed Arch on the Transepts are also different on the South and North side. North is perfectly round while south is more Pointy
