"Brain Salad Surgery" is the fourth studio album by English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released on 19 November 1973 by their own record label, Manticore Records, and distributed by Atlantic Records.

Lake's singing about his rock and roll lifestyle, having to hide/disguise himself in public and how the audience shouldn't want his livestyle. Every day on the road make him more more depressed (sadder) and more crazy (madder), he jokes "get me a ladder" (so I can hang myself). He's asking them "so you want to be a singer, songwriter, poet, musican, hang out with me, be my girlfriend, be on magazine covers, i.e. live my life?" "Let me tell you something, It just don't mean a thing".But... he keeps doing it because the "high" he gets from playing in front of the live audience keeps him going; i.e. "Still, you turn me on." "YOU" is his audience...

I grew up in the 60’s and the 70’s, ELPWas a constant presence in my life! Greg Lake’s voice was absolutely enthralling!! Keith Emerson’s Moog was groundbreaking! Palmer’s drums kept an incredible beat to tie it all together!! I’m now 66 years old and I still love every second of their music!! I really miss them!! Rock on, you giants!!!👍😀

Not only magic. He wrote this song at fifteen. Pure genious. To this day, one of my favorites. At seventy one, possibly my all time favorite.

I was only about 16 years old when this song came out. I am only now beginning to listen to ELP and Greg Lake's solo works. A wonderful singer, songwriter and musician. I wish i had discovered this music in my younger years. I look forward to discovering more here on youtube. RIP Mr. Lake.
