Italy: Amalfi Coast Drive from Sorrento to Positano

The Amalfi Drive (formally Strada Statale 163) is the conventional name of a stretch of road which runs along the stretch of the Amalfi Coast between the southern Italian towns of Sorrento and Amalfi. The road was originally built by the Romans. The drive between Salerno, at the southern base of the peninsula, and Positano follows the coast for about 80 km (50 mi).

For the greater part of its route, the road is carved out of the side of the coastal cliffs, giving spectacular views down to the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the other side up to the towering cliffs above. The road passes through the village of Positano, which is built on the side of the hill. Both the village and the whole drive are leading tourist attractions in the area.

The Amalfi coast is an UNESCO-listed landscape lined with small towns precariously perched between mountains & the sea.

I have driven this same route many times myself and have always wanted to record it, but for lack of a free hand couldn't. Most people could never describe the experience. You did a great job.

I've driven this a couple dozen times.. beautiful on a blue-sky, sunny day. Always took my time when raining, which is rare. Both cities are fantastic vacation destinations.

I did this drive on a bus from Sorrento a couple of days ago. The hairpin bends are scary as are the other vehicles parked and others coming the opposite way!!

Is it very challenging to drive there? Roads are pretty narrow but ppl do not seem to drive agressively

Can I ask if the road is steep? We are here with our motorhome and have a 50cc scooter to get about. We'd love to do this road, but with the two of us on it, the bike struggles to get up steep hills and we just get slower and slower. On the flat we bomb along OK. We'd need to travel the road in both directions, so a long downhill might be nice on the way, but we have to then make our way up on the return trip. What do you think?
