While it's great that the state is looking to protect and help rebuild Lahaina, it's a bit concerning to hear of plans to take over the land and redevelop the area as it sees fit. It's also concerning that cadaver dogs are going into toxic and hazardous areas without appropriate safety gear for respiration and footwear. They cited glass, nails, and smoldering materials in the rubble. If these areas are dangerous, working dogs must have appropriate protection. I would think that anything less would be inhumane and immoral.

Do not let the state take it over! They will surely f it up. It should be a business improvement district with the private owners agreeing on how to build the next generation of eclectic businesses. Not a homogenous design concocted by bureaucrats. I’ve been going to Maui for nearly four decades. I’ve seen it change over time, but the bones were still there. It will never be the same, but don’t let the state or feds do stupid stuff there.

"Already thinking of ways the state can acquire that land so that we can put it into work force housing" -Josh Green.

In other words, you will now have to pay the government for a house that was "given" to you as a replacement for the house that was passed down from generations before you and had no mortgage. Or you can sell the rights to that land to a government entity or BlackRock

"You will own nothing and you will be happy" -Charles Schwab

Hawaii is very expensive. I would rather live in a cheap $50k house in a safe area rather than to live in a $750k house in a area prone to natural disasters.

i think its shameful for governor to publicly announce intentions for state to take hold of the land (as preemptive move) and build some kind of memorial. its inappropriate and premature . for heavens sake -- lets deal with search and recovery to help the families affected -- they have not even begun to search all structures for victims. why is it these politicians always use disasters to campaign for re-election. wtf

Unscathed gasoline station at 4:05 amidst all the burned-out buildings sure speaks to the inadequate building codes in Lahaina... A structure that stores and dispenses gasoline was untouched, why?

I live out here in Talent, Oregon and we lost 2, 600 homes in roughly 5 hours back in 2020, and here we are 3 years later still attempting to rebuild the area. I can't see how Lahaina will ever be rebuilt, the idea that everything has to come in by ship is just unimaginable, and where does everybody work and live when the area is being rebuilt? Good luck to all of you, and I am sorry for your loss.

some advice from someone who's been through this ....
1) the insurance company is not your friend
2) research trades people . We had people from all over the country swoop in to make a quick buck .
3) people who's houses survived this tragedy need to go over it with a fine tooth comb, namely attics and roof damage . The embers from the fire that rolled through my town blew over a half a mile . fridges and freezers will most likely need to be tossed
4) The powers that be will need to consider fire breaks around populated areas .
5) all this of course is secondary to the loss of life . My thoughts are with you folks in this tragic time ... 🙏🙏🙏

The best thing the government can do for the victims of the Lahaina fire is assist in the rebuilding of Lahaina. Transforming Front Street into some kind of solemn memorial is not recovery.

Looking at the Banyan Tree in the sunlight that bright, to me it looks good. Even though the leaves are burnt, but the trunks are okay. Cause Banyans have 4-5 layers of protection, and there’s no oil in it. Like a pine and a maple, they have oil from saps and sugars. That’s when trees are flammable. Also thanks to the 46 limbs supporting it to stand and glad there’s no grass. Otherwise it will lead to the roots and burn. So we still can help it. Just give it 4, 000 gallons of water and a little fertilizer. Just not too much fertilizer. Or the tree will burn for real. So let’s go Maui! We have a tree to save. Do it for Lahaina! Cause that tree’s the heart of Lahaina. 1:53 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

The smells must be horrific.
I'm a burn survivor and I cried when this fire took off . Death is very sad but to live through being severely burned is horrific too. I hope these who passed away did so from the smoke. I have no words that can comfort these people only life is precious value the living and honor the dead.
