I see people complaining about the China thing and a few others. the point is, I think, it is simply a level of accuracy. the setting gangubai lived in, it was obviously not possible for her to be politically correct. it must be very natural for her to be racist or transphobic. she wasn't perfect, of course. I don't see a problem with this.

So I read this in a tweet so I’m not entirely sure if it’s true but it said that Bhansali didn’t have the best relations with his father growing up hence the use of his mother’s name Leela when he uses his full name. He does this to contradict the social norms of using the fathers name so it’s a nice slap in the face of toxic patriarchy. The line where Gangubai says : ‘Maa ka naam kaafi nahi hai?’ truly hits different when you take this into context.

Alia did well but I'm so over this style of filmmaking. Everyone wants to make another Dirty Picture or Once Upon a Time in Mumbai or Gangs of Wasseypur. These movies did well because they brought something fresh to an already overdone genre.
PS: love the choice of story though, I love watching movies based on real life stories. And the cast really is amazing
