I love Dutch cheese and as an American living in the Netherlands I can't get enough of it. Getting used to the cheese slicer was a bit of a culture shock though.

You are definitely Dutch now that you’re using it for other things than just cheese!! Congrats on this major milestone, Ava! ❤️😂🎊🎉🥳🎈

Een komkommer is ook heel handig om met een kaasschaaf te snijden! De kaasschaaf is overigens een Noorse uitvinding kwam ik laatst achter…

Eva, Some attention for the Boska brand. An original Dutch brand. They have several kaasschaven in their program. A non-sticky one, a one specially for soft cheese and a lot more.

I genuinely never even thought of a possibility that people in other countries might not know what a (the dutch word cuss idk the English version) Kaasschaaf is. I can’t imagine not having one.

We love to take credit for that invention, unfortunately it's a Norwegian product.

You are using the wrong one for young cheese. Your kaasschaaf is meant for old cheese as it has a tray. Young cheese should be shaved with a kaasschaaf without a tray

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to comment in Dutch or English so I’ll do both.

En:
Wait I didn’t know this wasn’t used as often as we do in the Netherlands worldwide, I use it like 3 times a week, but I’m a big fan of grilled cheese sandwiches so I eat it whenever the bread gets old.

NL:

This isn’t an exclusively Dutch thing though. I’m from the US and I grew up with the same cheese slicer. It’s kind of weird seeing something normal that I did every day growing up being portrayed as this exotic thing that ppl from the US aren’t familiar with. I’m sure there are families that prefer processed or sliced cheese but cheese blocks are still pretty ubiquitous they even have them in vegan cheese now. Now it’s also true that in certain stores the LARGE cheese blocks are more likely to be behind a deli stand so that you can ask them to slice you so much weight of cheese. But you are still going to easily find a block of cheddar and kerigold in any well stocked suburban supermarket. It’s not rare at all.

The Dutch do like their kitchen gadgets. I remember on our first visit to the Netherland, being dragged into a store just to buy an upgrade on the same Kaasschaaf that her parents had for year. Specifically as it was Teflon coated which slices through the softer cheese like butter, for want of a better term. Next visit I dragged her back into what I think was the same shop, just to get the grater version and also the Y shaped (vegetable) cutter which by the way cuts (narrower up to 5cm wide) softer cheese even better. I thought everyone had those little cheese knives that you get at action

You do know there are different types of cheese knives for different aged cheese? The one you have is for cheese slightly aged or older. It is the most prevalent but it is not suited for young cheese

I also use it to peel cucumbers and carrots 😂

You are doing better and better, now just take a photo in Volendam traditional costume. That makes you completely complete.

Not only can you cut potatoes into chips with a cheese shave, you can also take the skin of the potato very easily. Tried to teach kids how to skin a potato with a knife for years, as soon as you turn around they've got the cheese shave again...

Years ago, I got a call from my wife. She had sliced the tip of her Pinky with the cheese slicer. 18 years later, it is still a challenge at times
