While I like the cylinder wrap visual, anyone who's every wrapped something round for Christmas knows it doesn't just fold over easily. There's a complex mapping from that cylinder to the sphere at the top and bottom.

Hello! I teach students after hours and help them get better grades at school. I regularly use this video because it beautifully and quickly shows how the surface area of a sphere can be quickly determined. I was very saddened to one day not find this video anymore but an altered version that caused more confusion than before. I am glad that I had this still in my history so I was able to retrieve this video, but it's still sad that this gem of a resource is unlisted. I will see to download or record this one in case you one day decide to delete it, because it helped my students immensely by explaining a foreign concept within a minute, which would take me much longer just armed with a chalkboard and determination.

The cylinder area equalling the sphere area is mind blowing for me. I've just thought about it and found 'reasons' for both why it should be larger and why it should be smaller :')

The unwrapping of the sphere to the cylinder and flattening to a rectangle is SO elegant; thank you! This makes me wonder if there is some similar such magic pertaining to the surface area of a hyper-sphere.
