Look Better with Gray Hair! Makeup, Style and Attitude Tips from a Silver Sister

It's been 4 years since I ditched the dye and let my natural silver hair grow in. Since then I've had lots of conversations about aging and I've spent time looking at selfies to see myself as I am now. This photo diary has been a powerful tool for me to choose the makeup, style and attitude I bring with me every day.

I hope this resonates with you. Be well!

I let my gray hair grown out in 2020. I never saw anyone in my family go gray. So, I wasn’t looking for it. I had brown hair but dyed it blonde. I started seeing that my roots were coming in white, and stopped coloring it to see what would happen.
4 years later I have white hair around my face and on top and medium gray with white streaks on the length.
It’s the cool look I always went for when I was coloring it, so I felt extremely lucky that it’s growing out that color.
I’ve been described as blonde by men. But, on the other hand I’ve gotten comments from my sister and a girlfriend like “oh, you’re not coloring your hair anymore, I personally am not ready to give up.”
As if they were saying I’m letting myself go.
I don’t care, because I like it.
I’ve seen photos and videos of myself and I think I look in my early 50s, when I’m actually 62.
I think it’s because my hair is in the best condition it’s ever been from not coloring it.
My husband loves it too.
I retired this year, and I exercise about 6 hours a week. I haven’t been in this good shape since my 30s. So that certainly doesn’t hurt.
I loved the end part of your video. I feel extremely lucky to be healthy and alive, and lucky to have my 71 year old husband healthy and alive.
My looks probably will always be important to me, but they are not all of me.

I also need to lean towards darker colours in clothing since transitioning to grey hair. My hair is quite silver and those mid tones I enjoyed once no longer work now. Brows are definitely more important than they were in my makeup routine as is cheek and lip products. It’s interesting how what we see in others is merely a reflection of ourselves. I often forget that.

I think one reason for deciding to adopt my natural silver colour was to embrace being a “youthful older” person as opposed to an “old looking young” person. While I support women who choose to dye their hair and have cosmetic surgery to pursue a youthful appearance, I’m not sure they wind up looking younger most of the time. Thanks for the video.

I love natural silver on you so pretty. I have silver streaks and love the contrast myself. I am 58 yrs. Old. But I have cousins that went solid grey in their twenties. You look young for your age. Pretty complexion. And your hair is a pretty contrast

Great video Beth, I stopped coloring my hair in 2016, let my pixie hair grow out to my shoulders 2 years ago. Don’t care what anyone says, I’m 68, proud of it. You are beautiful, keep the videos coming.

This is the best video I’ve seen about transitioning to grey. I keep trying and then end up coloring. My fear is I have thin hair and I’m afraid it will look even thinner grey. But….you don’t know until you try

I’m 43 and I think I get comments on both ends as well. Had a young guy card me and said “oh you’re 80’s, I thought you were at least 90’s”. I smiled and said thanks. Mostly thought it was funny that his generation is calling us out by decade now 😂 as I got in my car I chuckled cause I’m 1980, not even “80’s”. I only have about 1/2 as much silver as you and do wished I had more but mine really does look more like highlights which probably lends itself to keeping people guessing lol. You always look fantastic ❤

I think there is so much to age perception beyond looks and hair colour. How one carries oneself, how mature someone is, how successful someone is in their career, so many things. I love what you said at the end and I agree completely. We almost lost my Dad last year (one year ago today actually I was sitting in the ER trauma room with my Mom (and Dad on a table, unconscious), trying to decide what he would want - we had some pretty tough decisions to make) and that experience really made me go from “ugh I’m getting older” to “let’s celebrate that we made it” - made it to another day, another week, another year, another birthday, aging up! Celebrate it all!! I’m so grateful I got to celebrate another Christmas with my Dad. And my Mom too!!
It’s so nice to see how you’ve learned what colours really work for you and which ones don’t. I’m getting there. I’d also love to have a professional colour analysis. I think that would be so cool….maybe literally!!😅

Wonderful video Beth. I hadn't been to your channel for a while as I'm not a great makeup wearer but I love the videos where you talk about your grey hair, attitudes within society and other aspects of your life. I too have silver/white hair and started to go grey when I was 15.! I coloured my hair for many years and always felt my hair colour was conflicting with my skin tone. I finally decided nature was the best colourist and let my hair go naturally silver. I have never looked back and can honestly say it was the best thing I ever did. I feel more authentic and confident but as we know it is a journey and I support women in all of their choices, it's a very personal decision. I particularly would love to see more about your choice of colours ( I have watched your previous video) and your personal style journey (kibbie). You have a wonderful way of intelligently articulating any subject you approach. Look forward to seeing more. Best wishes

My husband just told me something interesting. He heard a group of young people talking about an older lady standing in line at Starbucks. They basically said her dying her hair makes her look like an old lady with died hair! They actually thought she was in her early to mid 80's and very much in denial! We happen to know the older lady and she's 62 years old!😮

Love your silver hair Beth... I too have grown my hair colour out and I get so many compliments from young people. I find a bright midnight blue and baby blue makes my hair pop... White looks great too during Summer. I wear Sisley's Paris Rose lipstick.. It just lifts my face so much! You look fabulous 😊

I think you sparkle with your gray hair! I’m 65 and stopped “hi lighting” my hair shortly after 50!

Excellent video Beth 🎉 It will be 4 years for my transition on Feb 26th, best decision i’ve ever made. The only clothes I cannot wear is beige colours or nude/ brown lipsticks. I do wear a lot of bright lipsticks and do my makeup every day. I truly believe that anyone can look gorgeous with silver/grey/white hair, having confidence and not caring what other people think is really important 😃👩🏻‍🦳🤗 you look amazing as always 🥰

I don’t mind looking older I am just afraid of looking ugly. Bc generally I think going gray has been thought of as letting yourself go but when if you still do your hair and makeup 💄 it looks nice. I am 9
Months in and the times when you have to go to social gatherings is when it’s the hardest

Hello! Your channel showed up on my home page. I love it! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us🥰 I've never really been into my hair. I've shaved it off so many times. Then I started going gray in my early 40's. I LOVE my gray hair! I have extremely curly hair, so my gray doesn't quite flow yet, and came in clumps. First above my ears then through the front. The back of my hair is dark brown. I stopped using products that were bad for my hair because I was worried about the damage it was doing. I have it shaved on the sides and long on the top. This style works for me because we travel a lot and it's easier to take care of. Even with the gray people have a hard time guessing my age. Especially if I'm wearing a hat. I'm 54, but people usually think late 30's earily 40's. They say they would have guessed younger but my hair is gray🤔🤷🏽‍♀️ When my mom and I are both wearing hats people think she's my daughter because I'm taller than she is🤨🤷🏽‍♀️🤭
Drinking Water, eating right, exercising, and mind maintenance are a huge help in maintaining a healthy well being.

Thanks again for your time🥰💕🤗

Just recently started growing out my grey, can't wait for the transition stage to pass. Your hair is stunning, the colour is so flattering and definitely does not age you, your skin is what determines your age and yours looks young. Can't understand people thinking you look older because you dont. Also love your grey curls, so flattering. Thanks for the info, so helpful for me in the future when my regrowth is more than 3 inches.

I can so relate to your hair transition. Loved the comparison pics and your brutal honesty. I am 60 and started going grey in my early 30s (stress etc.). Stopped dying 8 years ago and feel prettier with silver hair but older sometimes when, like you, someone who is older assumes we are the same age. Complexion products can definitely age or bring life. You look stunning with silver hair and I just love the dark contrasting strands. You mentioned L'oreal detox shampoo in another video which I bought right away & have used it once a week since. Thank you for sharing your fantastic content!

Wow!!! This is an EXCELLENT video, Beth! I actually need to watch this a few more times, so I can fully absorb all of the content. I stopped dying my hair in 2019. I’ve never really thought about evaluating my clothes or my makeup. Your video is incredibly helpful, Beth! Thank you so much.🤗💕

Going grey helped my scalp health more than anything else. It was beneficial for my hair to use temporary and transparent colours to smooth the hair cuticle. It worked to shift my, at the time, extremely short hair in warm or cool directions. I am naturally warmer toned but as I’ve aged, I am more neutral. Some days I am more olive and some days I am more cool toned and some days I am golden. I totally agree with you on tracking. One thing that I do is to put on a piece of clothing that I feel like wearing and build the makeup around it. I am neutral enough that I can shift and accommodate the palette my first piece of clothing presents. I think the best thing about grey is that it opened up more options for me. I am enjoying the experience and the experimentation. I do have to play with a lighter hand because everything is desaturated and because of texture. One thing I can’t be too timid or subtle about is my lip colour. The classic nude lip is disastrous. Lip liner is mandatory.
