Hi, I've worked on these before. First check all USB ports for damage or things stuck in there. Incredibly a short circuit in the USB ports stops it powering up. Next thing to check is the Power Supply. Check for blown or bulging capacitors inside here. Replacing the caps often does the trick. Quite a bit of work taking the PS out of these units I've noted, which is a real pain.

I fixed my XPS 420 by replacing the power supply with a good used one. Dell made two different power supplies for this model, 375 watts (L375P-00) and 425 watts (L425P-00). The 375 watt PS is more common and less expensive - I got one at my local RE-PC for just $8. It has a single 6-pin PCI Express connector. The 425 watt PS comes with a second 6-pin PCI Express connector and supports graphics cards that exceed 75 watts.

i tried fixing mine and now it starts and then i comes on and is about to load up and then it turns off and then the power light switches to amber and the fan slowly revs up really high then and i turn it off because it starts to sound like it's going to explode.

all i did to try and fix it was to remove the graphics card and clean the terminals.

I still have my XPS 420 (and it's just broken, pretty much sounds like yours)

If the proccesser is dead it will do that too. my inspiron 9100 is booting up then bios lockes me out of it! any ideas of that? it was 20$ so that is OK if i have to replace it!

I had this exact same issue. I used a new, and more powerful power supply and it solved it.

I've had issues with this p.cOnce it was the graphics card. It was once the power supply.

Mines a DELL Optiplex 390. Am it's a Gaming build it worked fine and ran MAFIA DEFINITIVE EDITION that runs Super Good on my DELL but when I ran BeamNG Drive a CPU intensive game. So I had a Over clocked GPU an a i3 so it was bottle necked So I tried replacing the CPU to get better frames so I got one of my old CPU's Outta My Old Desktop. But I Bricked my PC trying to swaping out em to much. So I left it. came back tried again. I Really did Brick it in a way. Where one of my ram sticks almost caught Fire. So I stopped it. Then replaced RAM. Then today I saw the Supposed to be the Original CPU weirdly have slants so I replaced it with the i5 cause the contacts are More Flat and the only problem was is that there are board CPU pins exposed but the CPU is secure and in the side slots firm enough to fix the Old Problem of the PC showing Amber and trys to start up in a sec but then turns-off. So now i moved it around the contacts abit so now it starts up but a solid amber Much Like your Problem. And I just wanna know how to get it to boot and post when I hit the power button.

I think its your graphics card. I been trying to put a power hungry 570 gtx classified in mine and it does the same thing. I for one would look into a new low profile graphics card without additional power needed to the card on new egg or in the store. im using a crappy 6600 gt but its working. ask around maybe one of your friends has one laying around.

A quick google search suggests a graphics card failure. What have you tried so far?

good luck man... ive been trying to fix mine for a year now... I just can't fathom paying 100+ dollars for a new mobo for a fking 8-9 year old pc... It will play csgo and shit so it would be worth it but if my psu/processor is fried I will flip out. Check your usb ports for bent pins, and straighten them out with tweezers or pliers.. That's fixed alot of peoples online but alas, not mine.
