Reminds me of The Series of Unfortunate Events where the author repeatedly warns you not to read the series because nothing ends well for the characters and you're not going to be satisfied. It's a series where the author is also a character in the story.

That part about the crows is actually true, if you anger a crow not only will they hound you for years but will even teach their chicks and grand chicks to hate you.
On the flip side, if you’re friendly to them they’ll be nice back.

Horror in writing is arguably the most difficult to successfully pull off and the most rewarding when done right. The feeling of dread is what I truly enjoy in horror media, but I prefer when it's brought on from setting, mood, ambience, and so on rather than the dread of knowing there's a jump scare on the way. So finding written work that actually terrifies is always a treat.

The Author: Damn this shit scary, I don't wanna do this no more...

The monsters: Bitch you made us!

The Author: And I did too good of a job!

Fun fact: In Japanese, the words for "hair" and "god" or "spirit" (it's not an exact translation and never has been) are both "kami"

I think Miyazaki should do a horror movie some things in his personal ghibli movies are terrifying

when i lived in japan there was something so much scarier about this manga (and his other work, fuan no tane) than when i lived in america. the settings were all so eerily similar to my neighbourhood, the route i took to school, the hang out spots i liked to frequent, my own apartment. i stopped going out for late night conbini runs, took showers as quickly as possible, avoided looking at train windows at night, and slept with my lights on for weeks. having psychosis on top of all that certainly doesnt help that endless looming feeling of being watched

Man imagine if the author took drugs and started tripping the monsters or horror stories written would be insane / shocking

This has been on my reading list for a long time. Definitely going to check it out!

A lot of people say they're not into horror while not understanding that horror isn't just slashers and jumpscare stuff. There's dozens of different genres of horror from psychological thrillers, grimdark fantasy, bizzaro fiction, cosmic lovecraftion horror, gothic fiction, etc.

Gantz, Chainsaw Man, Monster, 20th Century Boys, Attack on Titan, Berserk, Hellsing, Dorohedoro, Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte, Claymore, Junji Ito, Elfen Lied, Battle Royale, The Promised Neverland, etc, all fall under the horror label.

This was my first manga back in the day. Loved it. It was basically the manga equivalent of "Scary Stories to Read in the Dark"

I am so glad someone covered this. This and his other main work Seeds of Anxiety have been some of my favourite horror manga ever. The quick jabs of horror and the artwork are something I'll never forget and wish more horror would borrow from. Not to mention the name of this username funnily enough was inspired by that radio you see in the beginning of the first volume

This really capitalizes on my obsession with urban horror. Monsters just thriving in modern day environments.

I think the "real life" stuff with the author was his way of ending the series but kept it listed as on-going to keep the horror going

Dang it’s so sad this manga has ended yet unfinished.
You should checkout the works of the author: “Children Don’t Play In The Dark” and “Dreams of A Distant Land”. Those two manga are from the same author, Uguisu Sachiko.

Edit: “Dream of a distant land” is the title of a chapter, my mistake. I meant to say “Beyond The Bad Dream…” (Warui Yume no Sono Saki…)

I got Volume 1 and went into it totally blind and was blown away at how actually terrifying this manga was.

That bald reflection of the woman in the train with that creepy af smile sent shivers down my back when I read the manga for the first time. I kept staring at the page hoping I'd get used to it but it didn't work.

One that reminds me of Fuan no Tame is Mieruko Chan, but this one is even more in my heart because Mieruko is not just horror, it is comedy and drama has a chapter what time are you terrorizing with a scary monster design then a change and you feel sad with the monster, and then you laugh right away, but at no time do things stop being threatening this manga is a gem and has a story in sequence.

Didn't read this manga yet, but I'm familiar with the author and his other work "Fuan no Tane", the guy really knows his craft of making horror stories and drawing unsettling imagery

Holy shit, his story literally didn’t want to be written in the most physical sense! He is a great author, I can see that already, but that’s the scariest thing about this manga honestly!
