Stop believing the misinformation out there that makes you spend more money when it comes to food preservation
For years I have reused my canning lids
Of course to the dismay of the canning police
Don't believe the people who have an opinion yet have no practical experience

Reusing your lids are safe and doable

And here's why

I have been reusing lids for years also. Good condition, check it is sealed. If it fails put in refrigerator and eat it soon.

My mother in law always reuses her lids. Granted, she does need to replace the damaged ones, but she has never had an issue with them. If the jars do not seal, they don't seal. She refrigerates that jar and it gets eaten first. God bless Starry!!

I’m in agreement… I’ve been reusing the same lids for years, I just made sure that the lids were in good condition.

Appreciate this video. So frustrated with buying lids over snd over. Especially when the price goes up

Thank you for stating this. I have been saving all of my old lids if they are in good condition. Good thing I did because I haven't had any luck finding lids. I haven't noticed any failures with the tomatoes, pickles, tomato juice, or meats.

In always wondered how people back in the days canned. They didn’t have the supply & manufacturing we have today.

The only thing with the new lids is the rubber seal is not as thick as the old ones.

Some people drop acid if you tell them you have reused canning lids. I had beans lose their seal due to food particles under the lid, clean them and reprocess, sealed like a champ.. I started using reusable plastic lids [Featured by Jill Winger] and after watching her trials with water, the lids work well and I never had any fail by adding a little extra head space.

I am in the process of cleaning out my basement, rings galore!!! Also have plenty lids and grab an extra box when I see them. I have also reused lids, plus used lids work great for vacuum packing.

Wow, your shelves are packed Starry! Our canning shelves up here in the NW are E-M-P-T-Y. No jars even. Now, I definitely agree with reusing your lids as long as they are in proper condition, but I would like to add a suggestion if I may? I do a lot of pickling and I STRONGLY advise people to keep any lids that have been used for pickling separate from the other lids, because vinegar leeches into the lid seal and will not come out and whatever you can with these lids will take on that pickled flavor. So, mark those ones and keep them separate. I learned this lesson a couple years ago when I opened a jar of brown sugar to put on my oatmeal and, let me tell you was the most awful brown sugar you could imagine lol! It tasted like sweet vinegar and it took me a bit to realize how that happened. **EDIT** I don't throw away my pickled lids, I mark them and save them for future pickling projects.

Ive done this a little and only a couple of failures. I also reuse botton top for things like jams jellies and relish.

Yup for years reusing my lids if not dinged or bent. Put them through a hot water bath prior to canning. Also reuse lids for dry oven canning, and vacuum sealing dehydrated foods.

In central Illinois, it's the lids only, we have an abundance of lids with rings.

I would agree, as long as they seal you are fine. The worst case would be they don't seal and you redo your work, or even worse they pop their seals later on and its too late to redo and the food gets wasted.

ABSOLUTED CORRECT!!! Who came up with the LID SCAM?? I grew up on a farm and my mother CANNED everything in sight! If the lid wasn't rusty, bent or didn't hold the seal we tossed it! Otherwise we used the same lids year after year after year.

I literally haven’t seen any lids in the stores for a good year now. I have a ton of jars, I just need lids.

Sometimes it fails from too much siphoning or head space issue. I wipe clean and try again, then eat it if it didn’t work. Been using the same lids for over 5 years now.

I subscribe to that haven’t yet mastered opening a lid without a ‘ding’. I even purchased a lid opener. 🤦‍♀️. Almost newby, but not quite.

Agreed. I reuse lids. And, if they get funky looking they can still be used for dry canning and storing.
