STOP MONO'ING BASS 🛑

I hear it everywhere that you should mono every bass note 🤨

This is not the case ❌

Wide bass sounds really good on stuff that isn't dance music

Give it a try and hear how nice and wide the bass sounds 👌🏼

For club use more mono bass under 150 delivers. Also consider low bass to be omnidirectional.

For dance music, it's good to mono the sub bass especially if the song is going to be played live at big venues where the speakers are far apart. The low end can phase cancel if the sub bass isn't mono.

I like to mono just the fundamental frequency in bass heavy dance music

You don't always need bass in mono when cutting vinyl.. it just needs to be in phase. Look at jazz.. where is the mono bass in jazz? There isn't any, you'll often find it panned over to one side.

EDM producer here… in all of my newer stuff I only really have my sub bass in mono. I have some mid basses that fill frequencies from 80 to 200Hz and those are in stereo. I think you can get away without making <150Hz mono if you know what you are doing

Listen to “gods country” by Blake Shelton. Massive low end and it’s definitely not mono

Well.. what about if you are planning to cut your record to vinyl? Leave it to the mastering engineer/vinyl press, OR make sure that mono sub bass frequencies are taken care of during the mixing stage? Also, what about phase issues on club systems? 🤔

I mainly do metal/rock and I usually mono my bass frequencies. In fact most the pros do. However, not everyone does, some do stereo bass with good success. So mono your bass if you wish, no problem, but dont think you have to ;)

is this good for boom bap and lofi? (classic lofi, boom bap aesthetic, not the dreamy lofi)

What about kicks and 808, I was advised to mono these

I almost always make my sub bass only partly mono and it works for me

for in some clubs you need bass in mono because of phase issues

A lot of drill 808s would actually sound awful if you put them in mono

Most people just repeat what they read on the internet when it comes to this subject, without fact checking.

most of your advices are so good, but you wrong with this one, If you bass ain’t mono it won’t hit the same, it carries the rhythm of the song so you need it in the center punching period, when I studied audio engineering or later on working in studios I’ve never ever seen an engineer not monoing their bass, what I did see is a lot of them cutting everything in stereo below 200-250 Hz with a mid/side EQ

What about bass split when you high pass your original bass (written with MIDI) at lets say 120hz and then add another track with pure sine wave playing the same bass under 120hz? I ve seen this tip on couple of music production channels recently.
