THE EVOLUTION OF PHILIPPINE/PINOY POP OR PPOP GROUPS
PRE-OPM AND OPM ERA AND THE BIRTH OF POP IDOL GROUP (1st GEN)
Pop music or popular music started to be part of Filipino lives in 1960s when rock and roll genre is the sound of pop music in USA. Pop music comes from the phrase "popular music" and refers to popular, light and commercial sound that characterizes this style. The first pop group in the Philippines was The Rocky Fellers. This group became popular in the Philippines and in USA where their song "Killer Joe" was the first Filipino pop song to enter the Billboard Charts. In the 1970s APO began to used Original Pilipino Music (OPM) to identify the pop music of the Philippines which originated from the western-influenced Manila Sound. It was adopted by the music industry. While Nail Clippers brought OPM Pop to Japan and even made a Japanese version of their song "Boy". And in 1979 Hagibis was formed and the 1st BoyBand and PPop Idol Group was born. The next decade, the 1980s was considered as the golden age of OPM Pop. And inspired by the training program of Latino group Menudo, Mr. Ryan Cayabyab formed the coed group Smokey Mountain Batch 1 and trained them to sing and dance for four months before debuting in 1989.
THE BIRTH OF PINOY POP (2nd GEN)
What separates a pop idol group to an ordinary pop group is that they are a total performer, projects a certain image, has influence and a huge fanbase. In 1990s, Smokey Mountain Batch 1 and Batch 2 were able to reached that status they released albums locally and abroad and conduct concerts worldwide, they were the ones who opened the doors for PPop groups to global stage, Batch 2 even championed numerous international music festivals. However they have age limit and when they need to form a 3rd batch, no auditionees passed the standards so Mr. Cayabyab just disbanded the group in 1995. Vanna Vanna was formed in 1993 and was the 1st PPop Girl Group. Universal Motion Dancers (UMD) was launched by Universal Records as pop artists in 1994. They were the most popular dance group of the mid-1990s, UMD later on was upgraded into an idol group due to their roaring popularity, they were able to launch albums and even starred in their own movie. In this same period, the meaning of OPM evolved and was used to identify all songs created by Filipinos regardless of music genre so the term Pinoy Pop was adopted to identify the Philippine Pop Music of that generation. It was widely used during music competition such as Metro Pop and Himig Handog.
THE GIRL GROUPS/BOY GROUPS ERA. (3rd GEN)
In 2000s noontime show Eat Bulaga formed Sexbomb Girls who made the Pop novelty genre popular in PH. They were the most successful idol group of that time as they were the Best-Selling Girl Group in Asia for a decade. Other popular idol groups of that time was The Hunks and Viva Hot Babes. In 2009, Filipinos were introduced to KPop or Korean Pop when 2ne1 was launched and one of their member, Ms. Sandara Park, had a huge fanbase in the Philippines until now due to her short stint in the country as an actress and pop singer in mid-2000s before becoming a KPop idol.
THE PPOP ERA (4TH GEN)
In 2010s Viva Records adopted the shortened word PPop (Pinoy Pop) to go along with the popularity of KPop (Korean Pop) during this generation. Viva formed numerous PPop groups to compete with KPop groups but failed. Until a sibling of a JPop (Japanese Pop) group MNL48 was formed and was able to have a hit song but still not enough to compete with KPop. Then SB19 handled first by a Korean company emerged and succesfully blended KPop culture to PPop music and brought back PPop to global stage.
THE IDOL GROUPS ERA (5TH GEN)
And now PPop is coming back to its golden age locally and globally just like during the 1990s and 2000s, all because of SB19, who is now under their own management. They found a new route going to the doors opened by Smokey Mountain in 1990s. They were trailblazers of Modern PPop. Bini is making their own way to the doors with a new music genre mixing PPop novelty and PPop ballad with other music genre like bubblegum pop, tropical music and UK garage. And more and more groups are striving to be a world class talent soon.
