I think we already knew Woody was the main character.

I mean the main reason he was considered more of a main character with Woody rather than a side kick is mostly due to how his role in the movie is portrayed.

In the first movie they are at odds over the idea that they are toys, Buzz rejecting this idea and constantly going against Woody more like a rival would. Then he shifts near the end of the first movie to working together and being friends. The second movie has Woody stolen away and Buzz is the one that leads the group out to find and save Woody. Buzz also gets a lot of character development in terms of being on the other side of the viewpoint of not believeing they are toys, he has to deal with another Buzz Light-year that does not believe they are toys. He then meets Jessie and they return home after they defeat the miner.

In the third movie Buzz, yet again he stands as a leader of the group to finding Woody, he even tries to negotiate with the Purple Bear that runs the daycare for better conditions for his friends. He goes through some difficulty with realizing about his trigger button that would turn him into a mindless minion. But they eventually get saved by the LGMs at the trash fire burner and return home, Jessie and Buzz are shown to being more depicted as closer than friends in this film. Finally the fourth movie he has a similar role with leading the group after Woody went to go find Forky.

I would understand if they meant for Buzz to be a sidekick for Woody in the first film, but they kind of shifted that balance of power with the next few movies to where it was Buzz and Woody both being in charge. When Woody was not around Buzz would take over, this eventually came to the end with the fourth movie where Woody decides to leave his friends. Leaving Buzz to be their primary leader. The shift for most people seems to be with how much development and rich writing Buzz had over the films, not to mention the fact that Buzz as a design was very different with his futuristic design. The sci-fi aspect as well as the dialogue that builds his character seems to be what makes him memorable, not to mention with all the merchandise and different medias he is shown and sold. The only one to be as loved and sold just about as many toys is Woody, but he is the main character so it is understandable.

I also loved Buzz Lightyear even as a kid. I’m positive that John Lasseter was also on board with the idea that he was meant to be a secondary character.

Wait really.... people didn't feel that buzz like a secondary character to yall. Ngl it seemed pretty obvious mainly because woody mainly had a bunch of scenes alone but buzz was always with woody or the other toys

The original Toy Story was all about Buzz & Woody, they’re the main characters of Toy Story, the first Toy Story was a buddy comedy. It was about Woody and Buzz’s relationship. Not one of them are the main characters.

I watched toy story when I was 19 and on my period and I was litterally sobbing when buzz realized he was a toy because it hit me as all the magic of childhood being sucked from my life. I was no longer a kid who "can do anything if I set my mind to it and beleive in myself" and I was pretty much shattered.

Maybe if I had only seen the first movie I would've believed both Buzz and Woody were the main characters but I feel like the second movie puts so much more focus on Woody than in Buzz that it's really hard to think of Buzz as the main character, even when I was a kid

As a kid I always took it at face view, I thought it was just a bunch of living toys doing living toy adventures, I knew woody was the mc but I thought all the toys were

When I think about it, Buzz never really had a big arc after the 1st movie. He assists others yes, but he himself doesn't go through nearly as much change as Woody does the next 3 movies.
