We are missing some of our favourite species while we’re at home but RSPB Scotland’s Stephen Magee has found a way to watch remarkable wildlife without leaving his kitchen. This week he shares a bit about barnacle geese.

I was fortunate enough to be a volunteer at a Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Caerlaverock near Dumfries in Scotland back in the 80s studying Barnacle Geese and since then they have been my favourite goose too. They mate for life and are indeed very pretty. They suffered terribly last year due to avian flu. Hopefully this year they will fare better.

What a great idea for a video series! Razorbills or guillemots next... theyre a bit overlooked when it comes to seabirds I think...

Down here in Devon, Powderham I saw a small flock of 5 barnacle geese yesterday .Apparently they are rare the more south you go.

I'm missing the Barnacle's was supposed to be in Dumfries in November, then again in two weeks to watch them it's going to be Autumn now unfortunately.

Why do you translocate field crickets instead of breeding them?

Jamaican field crickets are incredibly easy to breed and thousands are produced with ease. Is there something stopping you from doing the same with the native field crickets or have you never considered this as an option before?
